Book Description

Literary Lives May 1, 1999
Hemingway's great achievement was to free the novel from all the languid decoration and cozy indirectness that was its early twentieth-century inheritance. His terse prose taught the writer to engage life to the fullest in order to write about it, and his own life was the perfect demonstration of that principle.

Reissued to coincide with the centenary of Hemingway's birth, Anthony Burgess's insightful biography traces the rapidly changing scene from a happy, complacent childhood to the grim reality of the First World War and the vulgar unreality of the Second; from the Paris of the 1920s to the Spain of Civil War and the excitements of African safari to the somber last years in Cuba. Hemingway was rich and successful from an early age, yet public the fact that acclaim and even the Nobel Prize could not disguise he was a moody, suffering, and sometimes vicious figure -- a man who was finally unable to live with his own image.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Burgess's brief 1978 take on Hemingway is reprinted here as part of Thames & Hudson's revived "Literary Lives" series. This is little more than a photo-rich (116 in all), lightweight biography of the writer, although LJ's reviewer did enjoy the snippets of literary criticism squeezed in between the pictures (LJ 8/78). Though there are many better full-length biographies, this does provide a quick, concise introduction to the life and work of Hemingway, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on July 21.

More About the Author

Anthony Burgess (25th February 1917-22nd November 1993) was one of the UK's leading academics and most respected literary figures. A prolific author, during his writing career Burgess found success as a novelist, critic, composer, playwright, screenwriter, travel writer, essayist, poet and librettist, as well as working as a translator, broadcaster, linguist and educationalist. His fiction also includes NOTHING LIKE THE SUN, a recreation of Shakespeare's love-life, but he is perhaps most famous for the complex and controversial novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, exploring the nature of evil. Born in Manchester, he spent time living in Southeast Asia, the USA and Mediterranean Europe as well as in England, until his death in 1993.

4.0 out of 5 stars KeyWest must, March 24, 2011

This review is from: Ernest Hemingway (Paperback)
Enjoy this book if you are a Hemingway fan or headed for Key West, and if you are out of time just enjoy the many pictures of Hemingway and the people who are important to his story. Fascinating contradictory individual. I have more questions now than I did before I read the book, as this is a fairly short overview. It was a great read to prepare for the ambience of Key West and the Hemingway house. You may choose to go deeper when you return home, or this may be the perfect overview for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The importance of knowing the author as a person...., September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ernest Hemingway (Paperback)
Ernest Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" allows the reader to experience life on the other side of the page, so to speak, the life of the authors. Recognizing the author as a person, as having gone through the human experience, is an important aspect of the reading experience. It removes the barrier between the reader and the author thus allowing a better communication between the text and the reader. The author no longer seems distant and extraordinary, so the reader is able to absorb the book on his own terms, as one discusses life with a respected friend. Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" is particularly well-written, for Hemingway (as usual) does not talk down to the reader but rather includes the reader in his life as a matter of course. A truly remarkable bit of literature...
