This series, Bloom’s Major Short Story Writers, is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School; preeminent literary critic of our time. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up. This is both a personal and literary biography, combining material about Hemingway's life and work, emphasizing the way he contributed to and changed American literature. McDaniel uses background information and a variety of primary sources to help readers separate the real man from the many myths that surrounded him. She also includes excerpts from Hemingway's writings and quotes from reviewers and critics to illustrate how his work often mirrored or was influenced by his life. This is an objective account, admiring the man's desire to experience life fully and his enormous talent, but also examining his often cruel and erratic behavior, problems with alcohol, and battles with the emotional problems that eventually led to his suicide. Good-quality black-and-white photos appear throughout. Most biographies of Hemingway have been written for adults; this readable overview is a good choice for YAs.?Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb analysis and insight into the life of Ernest Hemingway..., October 1, 2006
Harold Bloom has been one of the most respected literary critics of the 20th century. This book is not a capitalization of the life of Hemingway (as declared in a prior review), it is unique insight into the writer and the man. The edited articles composing the book were created by some of the most respected scholars, journalists, critics, and authors of his era. Mr. Bloom has culled through thousands of written pieces and has selected the best works to best exemplifiy Hemingway, not only in his accomplishments and works, but also his thought process and methodology to create his masterpieces. Some of these essays are critical reviews, not just kudos in praise of Hemingway's works. Although I have been a Hemingway fan for over 50 years, I discovered in this book many new insights into one of the greatest and respected authors of the 20th Century.
