Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Not only are they magnificent examples of their genre, the watercolors, drawings, and print portfolios presented in this publication also provide a valuable record of Western cultural history and social mores from the 17th century to the present. Drawn from all over Europe, the more than 200 enticing works featured are--remarkably--part of an immense private collection. The primary focus of this book is to present lesser-known works from the collection, especially works that have rarely been published, if at all. There are familiar names: Hans Bellmer, Pablo Picasso, André Masson, Jules Pascin, and Max Ernst are represented by some unusual and surprising works that most viewers have not seen unless they are scholars. There are also many anonymous works, as well as sections of rare French and German series and portfolios, and six illuminating texts, including one by the French writer Georges Bataille, whose fascination with the transgressive and perverse make him an expert essayist on the subject. As fascinating as anything you'll find in the Kama Sutra.
