Not quite what i was looking for,

This review is from: Erotic Fairy Tales: A Romp through the Classics (Paperback)
I was hoping for something a little more erotic, and this book almost never says things straight out, the entire book is based on innuendos. the stories are classics, but the treatment of most of these could have been a lot better. My biggest problem with this book is that some stories didn;t even make it to the "erotic" level. -Disappointed

admittedly un-arousing, but still an excellent read,

I agree with the other reviewers about this book's lack as far as its ability to 'get you off' goes. It never indulges in just straightforward sex, and in fact it almost never gets to the point of coitus at all, but once I got over my initial disappointment, I went on to thoroughly enjoy this well-written, well-researched, light-hearted, and (above all) incredibly funny book. All you really need to do to enjoy it is to read it as a spoof (maybe even as an almost-satire) and expect the explicit sexual details to amuse rather than arouse you. I could not stop laughing throughout this entire book. I think it's wonderful. It's just not what you'd expect, that's all. In the category of comedy, it gets 5 stars from me, but as erotica, I admit that it falls far short of being, well... "erotic." Thus, my final score is 4.

And now for something completely different...,

Never been one for fairy tales myself -- until my boyfriend got me this delightful collection of stories for my birthday. I have since become a convert thanks to author Mitzi Szereto. She works within the original framework of the fairy tales, but molds them into something fresh and deliciously erotic. Her storytelling method is rich with symbolism and illusion, and can be enjoyed by both erotica fans and readers of mainstream fiction. There's a wonderful sense of playfulness in the stories, proving wrong those who claim you cannot have humor in erotica. I found the historical introductions a fascinating read, giving me a greater appreciation of a genre I had been dismissive of. I recommend this book to anyone who has an appreciation of quality erotic writing.

More literature than porn,

If you are looking for a book to really turn you on, this is not the book. There is almost an imbalance between the good retelling of the fairytale and good erotic material. The stories that seemed to best recreate the feeling of the original fairytale seemed less arousing in terms of our modern concepts of sexuality. However, there is a variety of characters, fetishes, and acts for anyone to find something of interest. If you can read the stories as literature first and erotica second, you'll be more pleased than if you are looking for orgasmic aids.

Nothing erotic about this disappointing book.,

This book was awful! There's nothing in it to arouse, or even titilate the reader. Characters have no clue that they even posess genitalia, and when things happen with that odd part of thier body, they're not sure why. Even orgasms are joyless, and characters don't understand what has happened. Sex is not fun in this book, only confusing. The style is detatched and jumps between modern metaphor and Brothers Grimm styling, which I found disconcerting. I purchased this book expecting a fun and irreverant look at some old classics, maybe some fodder for fantasy, but there was nothing here for me.

A sexy and imaginative retelling of fairy tales,
By Glenna Havenswood (New York City) - See all my reviews

At last -- a book of erotica written for intelligent people! I found many old favorites in here, along with some tales from more exotic realms that we in western culture are unfamiliar with. The author takes a wickedly creative approach, conjuring up the most outrageous sexual scenarios for the likes of Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother. Nothing and no one are sacred -- even a Maharajah gets turned into a Peeping Tom. I particularly like the fact that the reader can still recognize the original stories, which makes it all the more fun to see how the author has manipulated and twisted them around. The historical introductions alone are easily worth the price of the book. Yes, there is plenty to entertain and titillate here.

Author Mitzi Szereto has served up a tasty feast of erotic fun in this sparkling collection of stories. From the well-known to the obscure, she tackles the fairy/folktale genre with charm, wit and sexiness. A truly entertaining and original read.

double duty book is difficult to write,

This book has problems primarily because it tries to do two things at once: retell fairy tales and be erotica. If you approach this book with the mindset that you are rereading fairy tales then you'll enjoy how Szereto maintains the language and rhythm of fairy tales themselves though I think calling this a collection of the "Classics" isn't correct because many of the tales are rather obscure. Fairy tales are written this way though -- odd language, lots of visuals and info that seems out of place. If however you approach the book as erotica you will find it failing in several places as the terms are odd to our modern ears and the activities often too obscure to create a clear erotic image.

Fine literary fare!,
By Roika Chan (Salem, MA) - See all my reviews

Originally I was expecting something along the lines of typical erotica reading. Nothing too taxing on the brain. like most of what you get from writers of erotica. Was I ever wrong! Having never read Ms Szereto's work, I was sadly ignorant of the thoughtful and highly creative way she approaches the erotic. This collection of tales is anything but predictable. In fact, it contains some of the most clever and artful writing I've ever seen in this area of literature. This book is a lot more than just erotica. A superior offering, indeed.

Szereto offers up in this delightful volume surprise after sexy surprise -- all of which are served with elan. A truly original piece of work, Erotic Fairy Tales is wicked, funny, erotic and downright delicious! She manages to twist the fairy tales while still remaining true to their original forms, and the introductions make for some fascinating reading. You can't go wrong with this splendid collection of stories.
