Book Description

October 30, 2000
The Erotica Project was started when the authors realized that there is very little heterosexual erotica written by women. They began composing erotic vignettes that embraced male-female sex while turning traditional male erotic literature on its head. The Erotica Project features hot, literate, and emotionally charged stories that redefine sexual relations and broaden parameters of acceptable behavior. The authors combine sensual short stories in the tradition of Best Lesbian Erotica with intimate, personal commentary between women in the tradition of Girlfriends. The result is a portrait of women not as victims, but as sharing power - and pleasure - equally with men.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This is hot reading by any standard, a revelation of the unwieldy and unrelenting desires of straight women and an assertion that "it is revolutionary for women to take charge of and own their sexuality." The Erotica Project began as a program for WBAI Radio New York and moved to the stage in 1998, where performances sold out night after night and were critically lauded. While lesbian writers have been throwing off the sexually repressive views of some '70s feminists for the past 15 years, the authors of The Erotica Project felt that straight women still suffered from "anti-phallic theory" and needed a celebration of the male organ and their own frank infatuation with it. In brief vignettes drawn from memory, fantasy, and the life stories of friends, they explore heterosexual desire from the mainstream to the dark and transcendent, even including a few mundane and unhappy tales and a sprinkling of same-sex adventures. It is hard to imagine a straight man, straight woman, or lesbian who wouldn't want to hear these stories, by turns sordid and lyrical, graphic and tender, all of them grounded in a sense of sexual entitlement that would make Freud blush and Dr. Ruth wipe away a tear of pride. --Regina Marler

Propriety prevents my quoting much of the dialog! Excellent...sexual...a titillation. -- NEW YORK TIMES

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy & poetic, February 24, 2001
This review is from: The Erotica Project (Paperback)
Some of my favorite erotic writing is short, poetic pieces that work best if read out loud -- writing that lands with the impact of a good poem. I've been reading "The Best American Poetry 2000" alongside "The Erotica Project," alternating back and forth, since neither can be read entirely in a single sitting without sensory overload. At some point the poetry mixes in with the erotic writing and it seems to me that with a little more boldness in our world, they could be intermixed. Both should be read with a bit of poetic drama for maximum impact, and both of them reach inside to touch you someplace beyond ordinary literature....

The Erotica Project is sort of a tiptoe through the Baskin-Robbins of erotica. Does sensuality have a flavor? Can the erotic be so thick it can be served with a scooper? Don't forget the flavored syrups, because this book doesn't!! Four and a half million years of evolution hasn't changed a thing - erotica is here to stay! The Erotica Project lusts, devours and consumes in waves of passion. Slip into this warm wet book tonight and invent your own fantasy right here in the real world. Let's just say, you won't need to wet your fingers to turn the pages . . . .

2.0 out of 5 stars *BORING*, August 23, 2006

This is not what I expected. It is full of random "sexual encounter" stories. I guess I did not read the summary very well. I enjoy a novel and not short stories, I mean a couple of pages to a few more. I was disappointed in the book.
