Book Description

When Russell Howland quits his job ghostwriting weekly sermons for the pastor of a slickly-branded megachurch in San Diego, the young East Coast transplant crosses town to help launch a news site for an opaque mega porn company. Working alongside a doltish mentor, he finds that life in the porn industry falls far short of the idyll: nobody reads their publication, relationships become difficult to sustain, and industry free love proves maddeningly elusive. When he meets a coveted Slavic porn star, however, his luck turns. Yet he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that send him into exile, pleading for his salvation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insider's Look June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Did you know the porn industry is legal in the US and illegal in most other countries? What are the inside workings of a porn company, what kinds of people are the owners, writers, producers, and actors, what is the business culture, the sexual harassment policy, where are the offices and the studios? How do you put work like that on your resume? Because you do... And what would such work do to normal people and their relationships? Revealing, provocative, and fun, Erovinia is not for the faint of heart, but rings true from a promising young writer who thoroughly researched his topic. Looking forward to where he will go next!

5.0 out of 5 stars A peek behind the curtain April 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Erovinia is a solid read by a new and up-and-coming author. In Leopard's first novel, we get a little look into the backstage workings of the porn industry. Russ, a hardworking everyman with quite the vocabulary, takes us on a wild ride through the SD and LA adult entertainment business. Erovinia has a lot going for it: a fast pace, enough smut to please you pervs out there, a couple parts that made me laugh out loud, and quite a few twists and turns that kept me guessing. This is a self-published book that has lovingly come to us straight from the man himself. So, please don't slam it for having a few typos or other errors that an editor will clean up if this thing gets picked up by a big house. Love the fact this is free to Prime Amazonians. Thanks, Leopard J. Ferry and keep on writing, man!

3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, and occasionally enlightening July 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This novel shows considerable promise, and I look forward to reading more from the author. As a self-published work, it suffers in places from the lack of a ruthless editor, but Mr. Ferry has demonstrated a gift for characterization where it would be easy to devolve into shallow stereotypes. The narrative includes some genuine suspense and serendipity, along with sophisticated, complex, moral dilemmas. He provides what the reader can't help presuming is an insider's perspective on the two seemingly disparate microcosms of contemporary megachurches and the adult entertainment industry. The protagonist is a young man, with a facile intellect, who is attempting to secure stable employment in an unstable world. Mr. Ferry sheds light on southern Californian sub-cultures with humor and erudition.

The novel focuses on the world of adult entertainment, and Mr. Ferry spares no delicate sensibilities in describing pornography and its purveyors. That was initially off-putting for this middle-aged matron, but he was insidiously effective in describing the desensitizing effects that the infinite availability of pornography ultimately have on the erotic imagination. Potential readers should take note that this novel is not erotic. There are many explicit sequences, but they are usually presented with detachment, even cynicism.

My three stars might seem stingy, but I cannot say that this is "Moby Dick" or "Anna Karenina." I am a fairly tough critic, and consider three stars a perfectly respectable rating. I have almost never given 5, which I consider an "A+;" I only award 4 stars to books I consider first-rate. I read it while traveling to and in southern California, and found it entertaining. A few scenes are memorable, and some characters were very well-drawn. It is certainly worth keeping on a Kindle for an enjoyable read sometime.
