5.0 out of 5 stars standout cd
Compared to some of their other `one dimensional' albums, Erpland really shows what this band is capable of doing, compositionally and creativally speaking. A knock this band has is that every song sounds the same...I wouldnt go that far, but they tend to focus on a jam over one or two chords at times.

Erpland has some interesting twists, chord changes,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile though undercooked journey
3 1/2

Impressive modern progressive-light offering still often falls into it's own trappings with elongated, overdone yet underutilized structure amidst this space odyssey. Embellishing much of the repeated jamming with effective electronic touches, Erpland takes us down a fun, sometimes challenging, sometimes boring route painting the instrumental trip...

Compared to some of their other `one dimensional' albums, Erpland really shows what this band is capable of doing, compositionally and creativally speaking. A knock this band has is that every song sounds the same...I wouldnt go that far, but they tend to focus on a jam over one or two chords at times.

Erpland has some interesting twists, chord changes, different instruments and various ethnic influences and sounds which show their mastery over the array of analog and digital synths they use. You just dont get a blazing reverbed guitar solo with the bubble machines in the background, but a more balnced, and melody oriented approach.

Very good album, Id agree it is the `classic' in their catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of Ozric's Finest, August 4, 2005
This review is from: Erpland (Dig) (Audio CD)
This band may not be well known, but they are a real treat. Lovers of psychedelic music and creative Rock should own at least some Ozric Tentacles. I own what I believe to be their best music. I have Erpland, Jurassic Shift, Strangeitude, Pungent Effulgent, Curious Corn, and the Floating Seeds Remixed album. Erpland is one of my favorites. But the others are great too. They utilize so many things to make their music. It is really interesting, and never offensive. Pick up some or all of the titles I just mentioned if you like their vibe. It's all good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ozrics Best, April 10, 2008

If I had to recommend one Ozrics Tentacles album this would be it. It encapsulates all the band's myriad styles, from heady space rock to ethnic and acoustic trance jams to reggae-infused grooving, and delivers the goods like no other album of theirs can. All the band's albums more or less cover the same ground and sound alike so for anyone not wanting to shell out the hard earned wages for their many other disks you need not worry -- as long as you have Erpland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Expected, February 10, 2010

I was very impressed by this album. I didn't know what to expect, my wife had heard one track on the radio and knowing my liking for guitars and rock she suggested I try an album. I bought this particular album as other reviews had said it goes across the whole spectrum of the band's style. I was expecting heavy rock and did not get it. There was no disapointment however as the music is laden with guitars in what appear to be many different styles of music from rock to reggae, the drums and percusion feature very strongly and get inside your head so sometimes that's all you want to hear. There is a lot of synth and electric music too and very little singing, most of the album is instrumental. Listen to it a few times, especially track 5 which is fantastic. Thoroughly recommended.

This is my 7th Ozric CD and I love it! It is the most atmospheric and multi-dimensional of the ones I own. It really shows off their songwriting and playing abilities. It has more of a world music vibe than pure space rock, with lots of percussion, flute and odd noises and samples. I can either veg-out to this or listen to it critically and it works. I have the Sunrise Festival Live CD and I noticed a lot of the tracks they play are from this CD, but some of the best songs are unique to this CD.

Some of my favorites include:
Eternal Wheel - I really like the synth and guitar parts in - it has a great rhythm.
Toltec Spring is really cool. It has this amazonian beat and spooky bells and sounds in it.
Sunscape has a great groove with nice guitar parts.
Crackerblocks is another atmospheric layering of sound that is really cool.
The Throbbe has a cool jam over a simple pulsating synth groove.
Valley of a Thousand Thoughts - great drums and world music vibe.

I think this is one of their definitive CDs and you should pick it up if you like the Ozrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet!, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Erpland (Dig) (Audio CD)
Erpland is an awesome collection of spacy jams, mixed with middle eastern rhythms and styles. I had previewed this album and done some research into Ozric Tentacles, so I knew I'd be interested, and I was indeed rewarded with one of the best cd's I've listened to this year. The entire album is excellent and a real breath of fresh air. If you've never listened to Ozric Tentacles, then I think I can recommend Erpland as the best place to start. It was for me, and I'm already thinking about picking up Jurassic Shift. Good stuff and well worth the money.

It took me a while to get into Ozric Tentacles. Ten years ago I purchased their "Jurassic Shift" album and it did not do a lot for me. I ended up selling it back to a used CD store. A couple of years ago I had the chance to see the Finnish band Hidria Spacefolk at the North East Art Rock festival. I really dug them, and since they were constantly being compared to Ozrics, I thought I would give the Tentacles another chance. Over the years my musical tastes have expanded quite a bit and this time I "got it" with them and have been a fan ever since. "Erpland" was originally released in 1990 and was re-issued (and remastered) in 2003. I would say that it ranks up with the best of the band's material. Their patented blend of psychedelic progressive rock is in fine form here. The band also mixes in middle eastern influences and even a bit of reggae. Everything is instrumental with the exception of some non lyrical vocals on the final track "A Gift Of Wings". The remastered album sounds awesome on a good stereo system.

Impressive modern progressive-light offering still often falls into it's own trappings with elongated, overdone yet underutilized structure amidst this space odyssey. Embellishing much of the repeated jamming with effective electronic touches, Erpland takes us down a fun, sometimes challenging, sometimes boring route painting the instrumental trip. Musicians will likely be captivated by some of the inherent talent, captured best in potent bursts of deep space electrojams, before succumbing to the eventual feeling of the more prevalent detached, methodical pace.
