With reggae and hip-hop influences thrown in with classical holiday fare - this album really puts you in the mood for the 8 Crazy Nights of Hanukkah. The whole album is a joyous celebration of a rich culture and would be a cool gift for anyone on your list.
Herschel Ben Yehuda - Seattle
Yet all the best known Christmas songs. ("White Christmas", "Rudolph", etc.) were written by Jews.
This CD is an attempt to bring more Jewish holiday music to the younger generation who frequent dance clubs. After all Matisyahu blended Jewish traditional music with Reggae and scored a hit.
Produced by Erran Baron Cohen - best known for scoring his bother Sasha's movie "Borat", this album blends some traditional Jewish songs, played to a "different beat", with new songs. Most of it works, but not all. The second track "Dreidel", comes on a bit too strong and changes the mood after the opening "Hanukkah Oh Hanukkah" - again, not the way those who grew up in the 20th Century ever heard it.
If George Harrison lost his lawsuit with the Chiffons over borrowing the melody for "My Sweet Lord" from "He's So Fine", then Baron Cohen is on shaky ground with "Look To The Light". You'll sing along easily but will clearly be caught up because you know "My Sweet Lord". It's a fun sing along though. The most passionate track, in my opinion, is "In The Light Of The Candle". There are guest hip-hop artists on a few of the tracks and all will work in a Dance Club situation.
I'm not sure you'll hear these tracks on the radio this season; radio is too "programmed" for that. (Though the "programmed beats on the tracks on this CD" are programming of a different kind.
This is a disc you can give your 16-25 year old Jewish son or Grandson and show them, there's more to Jewish holiday music than Adam Sandler.

Was skeptacle at first, but came to love it as I appreciated the different musical styles (i.e., rap, reggae, etc.) that the songs were integrated with!Published 17 months ago by Cheryl Len
Really liked the variety and style of the songs. Traditional songs played in a very non traditional way made the CD a favorite.Published on December 28, 2013 by Jeffrey P Seligsohn
