"The Errant Ricochet" Surprised Me!, March 20, 2009
This review is from: The Errant Ricochet: Max Raeburn's Legacy: and other tales of suspense, humor, and fantasy (Paperback)
I do not ordinarily like to read books of short stories. No sooner do you get involved with the characters and caught up in the story line than it's already over. How delighted I was to find that this book did not fit that stereotype. The flaver of the characters comes through immediately and the story lines grip you from the first paragraph, if not the first sentence. And the range of emotions experienced from reading so few pages comprising each story totally surprised me.
I loved the "lessons" Miss Crabtree taught her neighbor's children. Who knew that burying a dried pea in the yard could work such "powerful medicine?" Not to mention learning the "proper" way to dip a cookie!
One of the longer stories in this collection, "Just Desserts," was riveting from beginning to end. The twists and turns of the story and its characters prevented me from putting it down, even for a moment. {"Greed" never fails to provide the basis for a good story line....}
But the real "star" of the book was the last story "The Errant Ricochet, Max Raeburn's Legacy." What brilliant inspiration it was to connect this story to that of the "Titanic," a tale we all know and love! {But I shan't tell you what that connection was!}
I would like to thank the author for instilling in me a new appreciation for reading collections of short stories. I will not be so reticent to try again the next time a promising one comes along!
