Book Description

September 1, 2004
Long regarded as Hollywood’s prodigal son, Errol Flynn packed more into his 50 years than most of his high-living contemporaries could have done in several lifetimes. The quintessential hedonist and an insatiable womanizer, Flynn was infamous for his drinking binges and high-spirited bacchanalia. Here, David Bret traces the extraordinary life, loves, and career of the cinema’s first action-adventure star. With the spectacular looks and athletic prowess that first attracted the attention of Warner Brothers, Flynn reveled in the public acclaim for his performances in Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Adventures of Don Juan. But his on-screen panache did little to hide his scandalous personal life. In a series of compelling revelations, Bret divulges the star’s staggering appetite for young men and underage girls, his brawling, drinking, and drug experimentation, and his controversial political leanings. It is an often startling portrait of an incorrigibly complex man and one of the undisputed icons of the 20th century.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Without regret or apology, Errol Flynn documented his extraordinary life before writers could have their way with him as a dead man. Bret, however, takes on the Flynn mythology in this new biography. "Only the gods know what lies ahead of a fellow who makes good and becomes the greatest shot in the arm this town's had for years," wrote Photoplay journalist Warren Reeve of Flynn's arrival in Hollywood. More than a shot in the arm, the swashbuckling actor was a force of nature, often destructive to both himself and others, dying of a massive heart attack at age 54. The Olympic gold medal boxer and notorious anti-Semite arrived in Hollywood with the same arrogance and flair he exhibited as a child and teenage adventurer in the South Pacific and Asia. A vigorous lover of both sexes, the "Tasmanian Devil" enjoyed relationships with numerous stars, including David Niven and Tyrone Power. He was a robust conqueror of women as well, and his misogyny was reinforced by a platonic friendship with artist Diego Rivera, who approved of treating women "like dogs." With the same gusto and verve of his subject, Bret plows through Flynn's escapades and accomplishments. It may be difficult for some to reconcile Bret's assessment of Flynn as some sort of hard-living heroic figure, or an "essentially good man," after reading about the actor's deplorable treatment of women, his sexual voyeurism, his penchant for underage girls and his hatred of Jews. Yet Flynn was enormously talented and dynamic, and Bret's efforts result in a generally unprejudiced look at a man who left a lasting mark on the cinema and many in it.

More About the Author

"Amazon USA is Janus, pure and simple. You get 5-stars reviews and tremendous praise...or you get 1-star reviews which are so poisonous (the July 2011 one for "Valentino", by Markus King being a prime example)that they defy belief. If someone leaves a 5-star review, you can guarantee that a poison review will pop up the next day. The homophobic Valentino female fans are the worst--easy to discern here, they cannot accept that he was gay, loathe anyone who suggests that he might have been, and have set up a hotbed of loathing against this author. There is of course a maxim to all of this: if Bret's books were SO bad, how come that he has been publishing for a quarter-century, and outselling ALL of his rivals?

Diary For 2011:
"Elizabeth Taylor: The Lady, The Lover, The Legend", April, to be followed by special foreign language mass-printings (Poland, Russia, Sweden, China, Japan), September-December.

"Freddie Mercury: Too Young, Too Soon", September.

Born in Paris in November 1954, Bret published his first biography, "The Piaf Legend", in 1988. His other bestsellers include biographies of Maria Callas, Mario Lanza, Gracie Fields, Elizabeth Taylor, Rudolph Valentino, George Formby, Rock Hudson, and around twenty more. His two biographies of Morrissey have sold in excess of 150,000 copies in the UK alone.

Bret loathes fan forums, another reason for the one-star reviews:
"They place their idols on pedestals, but they see the idols only as THEY want to see them, not as they really were. Really, I am SO flattered that they can devote so much time to attacking me, and it is such fun attacking them back--though of course they do not like having a taste of their own medicine!"

This review is from: Errol Flynn: Satan's Angel (Paperback)
This 'author' claims that Errol had homosexual affiars with every man he met! Convieniently, all quotes regarding Errol's perversions are from long deceased people, thus avoiding any disputes. The book is filled with incorrect facts, too numerous to list. One glaring lie claims that Errol's last word were,"I've had a lot of fun & enjoyed every minute of it." This is a quote Errol made on a TV appearanance-you can hear the recording on several internet sites. Save your money, there's nothing worth reading in this book!

This review is from: Errol Flynn: Satan's Angel (Paperback)
To me, this wasn't much more than an extended Hollywood tabloid. Most of this book recounts "he said, she said" anecdotes rather than documented information from credible sources. I only counted three first-hand quotes from people who would have known the truth. And, all three were well-known for being quite flamboyant, themselves.
There's little doubt Flynn was a bounder who could be as charming as he was hateful. And there are certainly numerous first-hand accounts of his preference for teenage girls (and boys). But, in his own bio, he acknowledges this and offers no apologies for his promiscuity. This book pulls a lot of info from the official biography without expounding upon it. The fact Flynn recognized the difference between good and bad yet often flicked his nose at moral standards, is what makes him such a complex and therefore, interesting personality.
I was disappointed Bret didn't offer a more substantiated version of Flynn's life. Flynn was clearly a complex personality with plenty of skeletons in his closet. Its clear the official bio was edited in order to protect powerful/wealthy entertainment families. So, I'd hoped for a more objective account from this author.
