Artist in direct contact,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eruptions (Paperback)
The title of this book seems wrong but that's the only thing that's wrong with it. Also right is the reader from the midwest who gave it as many stars as she could. So do I! I can't remember a writer as capable of conveying sensations of color, texture, flavor as Sarsini. This artist lives in an immediate contact with her surroundings. Take "surroundings" to mean her city, Florence, her friends, her piazza, her room, her body; no detail is too slight to escape her observation. Descriptions emerge like revelations. The style is poetic but this is not poetry. It is experimental stylistically in so far as it moves in waters which have not been fully charted. The way it is written seems to reflect a kind of experimental approach to everyday life...almost like a child's. The writing is lyrical, spontaneous and direct. Having read Sarsini in Italian, I read this book out of curiosity wondering how in the world anyone could translate the music of her language and her idiosyncratic choice of expressions. It would take an unusually trained ear and an enormous respect for words and their stories. All I can say is that Maryann De Julio did a spectacular job and I just hope she'll keep with it. A rare jewel of a book!

This review is from: Eruptions (Paperback)
Eruptions is a collection of Florentine writer and multimedia artist Monica Sarsini's's short fiction, ably translated and with an informative introduction by Maryann De Julio. All of the stories are sensual explorations in Sarsini's distinctive experimental and narrative style. These impressionistic short stories evidence a lyric, poetic, sensual flair for observation and expression. Eruptions is highly recommended reading for those with a taste for the unique, distinctive, creative, avant garde writing.
