In the future, the world's most powerful weapon is the mind. People known as metahumans or E's are capable of converting thought into energy. When the planet needs law and order, will these powerful psychics choose to control the world or save it?
In the not-too-distant future of E's Otherwise (broadcast, 2003), the military subcontractor Ashurum recruits teen-agers with psychic powers to enforce order for the 12 mega-corporations that run the world. Their newest recruit is Kai, a well-intentioned kid unaware of the formidable abilities he possesses. But on his first mission to the supposedly deserted city of Gald, he discovers that his commanders lied to him the about organization's activities--and what really goes on outside of their sanitized headquarters. A chance encounter with Robin Hood-esque Yuuki and his klutzy friend Asuka confirms Kai's misgivings. E's Otherwise borrows heavily from previous psychic teen adventures, notably s-CRY-ed. But the story lacks the feuding friendship between Ryuho and Kazuma that gives s-CRY-ed its quirky appeal. Fans of bishonen (beautiful boys) may enjoy Kei's "Tiger Beat" cuteness, but other otaku may dismiss the series as "been there/ psyched that." (Rated TV 14: violence, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon
