I love this creepy band!,

I realize that Anna Varney and his...err...her band (Sopor Aeternus And The Ensemble Of Shadows) are probably a little bit too serious for most of us to grasp. Obviously this band has an extreme sense of artistic expression. Nevertheless, I find this haunting gothic melodic music verry, verry entertaining. Nobody brings on the creepy factor more than Sopor Aeternus. The music is full of violins, cellos, oboes, and ooky spooky atmosphere. Mostly in english...a little bit of german. Great concept album on vampires. For fans of Dead Can Dance, and Current 93...err, sort of. >:)

German Transexxual Vampire with a Crowley connection.,
By CRAZOTOLOGY (Joplin, MO. (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Es Reiten Die Toten So Schnell (Audio CD)
Anna Varney (a transexxual introvert) is the lead singer and primary composer of Sopor Aeternus And The Ensamble Of Shadows. Most of the lyrics on this album are in english but some are also in german. The name of this album (Es Riten Die Toten So Schnell wich translates into english The Vampire Sucking At His Own Vein) is by far one of the darkest albums by this band. Make no mistake about it, Sopor Aeternus are a goth band....but not goth like The Cure and not goth like Marilyn Manson either. Think Dead Can Dance....only evil. That's probably the best way to describe this music...it's evil sounding Dead Can Dance. This is some really dark, dark, dark, stuff here.....a must have for underground goth types and eccentric music collectors.

I have six Soper Aeternus CD's and this one is the hardest for me to get into. It lacks the dynamic emotional range and beautiful melodies of "Face One" and "Face Two" (Dead Lover's Saraband). It is a very dark CD and some standout tracks are "Omen Sinistrum," "Dead Souls," "Beautiful Thorn," "Dark Delight," and the most delightful and stirring track, "Sopor Fratrem Mortis Est." Some songs just seem to have a sameness about them. Perfect background music for those quiet and dark evenings where you just want to let the music spirit you away.
