Esbit Solid Fuel Tablets

Literally. as in I opened the package and went "wtf is that smell???". The tablets that came with the esbit stove didn't have the stench of cat urine, so I'm not sure what's wrong with these. They do work. Boiled 2 cups of water in about ten minutes. Nice tall flames and all. But eeewww wwweee! le skunk de pew! I decided to keep them in a subspace isolation field until they are needed when I go camping. However, due to the warp core breach, I was forced to use a plastic baggie. I was going to give four stars were it not for that horrendous odor.

The description claims that one cube will boil 1 pint (16 oz, 2 cups) in 10 minutes. But it does not. The fuel only lasts 10 minutes and the water does not boil, it gets very hot and I'm sure would make great hot cocoa or tea but it does not boil water enough to purify it. Using two cubes would work I'm sure but that is not cost effective at all.

These light easily and burn well. I have used Esbit for many years now and glad its available on Amazon!

For fast and easy starting, I carry a little fire starting paste.
Even though I wrap the fishy-smelling fuel in foil, then 5 plastic bags, I am concerned that bears might find the fuel attractive. I would be interested to know if anyone has had problems in bear country.

Handy things to have on hand for emergency, or to make a hot drink in the field when ever you feel like it.

Tested out on about 12 oz of water and only warmed the water up. Don't depend on it for that. And any unused cubes need to be in a plastic baggie. They smell bad. But I can still use them for fire starters. They light easy and burn for about 10 minutes. You can blow it out, save it, and light it again later.

Price is too high. You can get it for half price in store (assuming you live near a store that sells it, I get it from REI). As for the actual item, I stock them in my emergency kit, and I have never had to use them (yet).
