Book Description

When college sophomore Angela Birch sneaks from Texas to Mexico for Spring Break, she believes the worst that can happen is her parents finding out.

The worst is falling for the ruse of handsome, alluring Fernando. One spontaneous choice whisks Angela across the world to the pseudo paradise of Spain’s Mediterranean Riviera where she has another choice to make: live cooperatively as one of billionaire Marco Ruiz’s slaves, or die.

Colin Douglas’s future was seized and choked when deliberate tragedy struck his Scottish family at the age of sixteen. He spent his remaining youthful years infiltrating the U.K.’s crime world, seeking power, control, and revenge, all leading to a position as an undercover agent. With nothing to lose, Colin accepts the seemingly impossible job of rescuing America’s famous missing girl, Angela Birch. Colin knows that to enter a snake lair, one must become a snake. It turns out to be a mission which will put his desire for control to the ultimate test, and make him wish for things he never knew he wanted.

*AUTHOR'S NOTE* Escape from Paradise is a work of fiction intended for adult readers, containing graphic sexual scenarios and strong language.

As a reader, have you ever had to tell yourself to just breathe through a difficult part of a story? Have your eyes ever filled with tears at the unbelievable cruelty some people are capable of inflicting on the innocent? Have you ever gotten so angry that you wanted to scream and curse at a fictional character? Have you ever felt true disgust and hatred for them? Welcome to Escape from extreme and no holds barred "hell" on earth. It is violent, brutal and touches on subjects that are shocking and not for the faint of heart.

The author has done an incredible job with this story but it is very, very graphic...and when I say that, I'm not only referring to the sexual aspect of it - it also contains scenes of utter degradation and intense humiliation suffered by the protagonist, Angela and some of the secondary characters. The story is extremely well written and it will undoubtedly wreak havoc on your is just that powerful and the subject matter of modern day slavery is intense and difficult to stomach.

I don't really consider this book a romance or erotica - rape, forcible confinement, violence and being treated like a dog just don't fall into those categories, at least not for me. Angela's relationship with Colin is the one bright spot but they both suffer so much for it - Colin as he struggles to remain focused on his objective instead of his emerging dark side and Angela as she tries to understand why her long suppressed emotions are suddenly raging and making her take crazy risks to be near Colin. She is warned by the other slaves to keep her heart out of it but the heart wants what it wants.

Escape from Paradise certainly captured and held my attention. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Her name is definitely going on my watch list. Verified Amazon Purchase on

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and confronting. July 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started this book late one afternoon when I had to drive a very long distance the next day. As I later found out, I really should have left it alone. This is not one of those stories you pick up and put down at leisure.

The heroine, Angela, is very real. Her voice is engaging from the first page and you start to feel that she is you in your early 20s, or your sister, or your best friend, or (Heaven forbid) your daughter. Consequently, the decisions she makes, and the terrible ramifications she endures, feel too close to home. I couldn't stop reading, because I couldn't leave her character in the hellish "Paradise" that she was forced to endure. I had to keep reading in the hope there really was going to be an escape and, more importantly, redemption.

As another reviewer noted, an aspect of this book which can be quite off-putting is that it is based on an unpalatable reality - sex slavery in our modern times. Having worked overseas in certain countries, I have seen the underbelly of misogynistic, wealthy societies that offer work opportunities for western women which are actually well-disguised attempts to promote prostitution of (often naive) girls looking for paid adventure in foreign lands. Accordingly, I found some of this story a bit confronting, even if it was a more forced scenario than I have personally witnessed.

So, if you are really uncomfortable reading about forced sexual relations with random, not particularly attractive men, this is not the story for you. That aside, it is a compelling tale and there is a HEA, of sorts, at the end.

The writer is technically proficient, making this a very easy read. However, there were a couple of things that irked me:

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark Love Story June 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story is well written and the author did a great job describing the characters that made the reader think they were real. The sad part about the story is that sex trade is not fiction and what has happened to Angela happens frequently to many girls and boys around the world, only they do not have a happy ending. It was emotionally difficult to read at times because the sex trade business is very much real, very brutal, and there is nothing sexy and desiring about it. It is a good read but a very dark story and if you are not comfortable with brutal humiliation, rape, and demeaning behavior, this is not a good book for you.

First off, do this author a favor and READ THE SYNOPSIS for Escape from Paradise before grabbing it up!!!! This is a very dark, gritty story that deserves readers who know what they're getting into and can appreciate it.

Blonde, privileged beauty Angela Birch was living her worst nightmare. What was supposed to be a rebellious vacation with her friends turned out to be a cruel twist of fate when she found herself a kidnapped sex slave. At the mercy of Marco Ruiz, Angela was thrown into a world she'd only seen in horrific stories on television, but it was clear early on that living in denial would get her nowhere.

Hot anger churned inside my clenched abdomen, running down my arms and legs, making my feet and hands tingle. I clamped my jaw down hard, grinding my teeth together. With a last pat on my knee, Marco left me again. And this time I was too filled with rage to cry. ~Angela, p. 57

Colin Douglas, meanwhile, was suffering from his own demons as he took on the mission to find the missing American girl. He'd spent his whole adult life worming his way into the criminal underbelly, just to bring it tumbling down from the inside. But to infiltrate the fortress that was Marco's isolated "paradise", Colin had to become what he hated most. He just didn't realize how much his desires would factor into Angela's captivity.

This book absolutely floored me! I was so completely lost in the story at every moment, it just gets into your mind and under your skin to the point it consumes your thoughts. What Angela had to endure had my stomach twisted up in knots as the humiliation, pain, and degradation became all that she knew. And the fact that Angela is such a relatable character made what she endured that much more poignant.
