5.0 out of 5 stars A Real American Hero
Thomas Hamill was an ordinary farmer who was searching for a way to serve his country and help his family financially. His story of the capture and escape was riveting. His courage and faith is a true inspiration to all. The book was easy to read and very hard to put down. Highly recommended to all- regardless of political persuasion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Met the man...read his story...want YOU to read it!, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
(A rewrite of review below due to mistake in stars rating)

I met Tommy & Paul at a book signing in Mississippi. Thomas Hamill is a very humble man. Thanks Paul for writing a book that us "common folk" can enjoy...without having to wade through the "elites" vocabulary overkill. Like almost everyone, I knew the story...even it's ending...yet I didn't want to lay it down. I didn't tire of hearing the detailed accounts of Tommy's day to day (all 24 of them) events while captive because it caused me to feel like I was right there in the rooms and vehicles with him. His almost comical way of naming his captors based on their personalites made each charater involved more vivid. It is an inspiring story of faith in God and how "waiting" on God's "timing" is so vital...something we all need a lesson in. When I've watched other hostages aired on TV, pleading and crying as they begged for someone to rescue them, I felt so sad, because unlike Tommy, they had no peace...only torment and fear. Read how Tommy's faith in God not only carried him from day to day...but from minute to minute through what he referred to as..."the valley of the shadow of death".

5.0 out of 5 stars What a story!, November 28, 2004
This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
WOW! This is the most inspiring story I have ever read. I literally could not stop reading. I felt as if I was there in those shacks with Mr. Hamill. The manner in which he dealt with his captivity is amazing and moving. "Escape in Iraq" is currently #26 on the New York Times bestseller list. It should be number one. This story is refreshingly uplifting and should give hope to all who read it. Dealing with my daily problems, which now seem miniscule, just became easier. I hope he sells 10 million.
I can't wait for the movie that MUST be produced!

5.0 out of 5 stars An In Depth View of the People on Both Sides, October 25, 2004
This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
I wish I knew more about what was going on in Iraq. Most of what I learn comes from either the news media (most of which are of the 'if it bleeds it leads' variety aiming at only a few seconds of sensationalism.) or the political candidates who are both mostly saying that the other doesn't know what he is doing.

This book is about a man who was kidnapped by Iraqi fighters and held for almost a month. I was most interested in the way he was treated by his captors. And on the whole it wasn't too bad. They were not evil personified as one might have expected from the beheadings performed by others. In fact, they treated his wounded arm with surgery and antibiotics. His captors were not exactly friendly, they certainly didn't turn him loose, but nor were they unduly hostile.

This book is about a particular incident in a nasty situation, but most important the book is about the people involved. Both Mr. Hamill, and his captors are no longer the cardboard figures you see on TV. They are all real people. It's great to get such an in depth view.

4.0 out of 5 stars A CIVILIAN WAR STORY, February 6, 2005

The experience of living through an encounter while many of your friends have been killed and then being captured by the enemy not knowing if your life is going to be spared is a terrible happening. This book details before, during, and after this episode in Iraq to a non-military participant working for the military as a truck driver. Spiritual faith is what kept Mr. Hamill going along with his concern of his family. Without any kind of instruction (except prayer) He was able to satisfy his jailers where they did not torture nor do away with him and was finally able to escape on his own. The writing was not superb, however, the story keeps you interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting easy read, September 6, 2005

This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
This was a fantastic story from a dairy farmer who went to Iraq as a contractor to make things better at home. The story is a heartwarming one--about his family, his wife, his love of God and his faith that carried him through the frightening attack from terrorists on the convoy that he was leading, through his capture and 24-day captivity in the hands of Iraqis. It was simply written so that just about anyone could grasp what he was going through; the visual imagery was just like some of the books I read in childhood; I felt I was there with him. I enjoyed his naming his captors, it made me chuckle--that although he could lose his life at any time, he was quietly taking note of things around him and amusing himself; something his captors could never take from him. They say freedom is an "inside job". Thomas Hamill has that freedom. This is a remarkable story of courage and faith. It also gave me an interesting perspective on the Iraqi people since he didn't stay in one place and met many of them. Some interesting conversations went on about Saddam and Bush and American culture versus Iraqi culture. I thought it was intriguing and well worth the time. As a matter of fact; I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape In Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story, October 27, 2004
This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
Escape In Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story - I've just started reading this book and I cried from the beginning of it already! Guess just my emotions / fears get all wrapped up in it. My fears for him and his family during this whole ordeal.. He holds nothing back, very open and honest. I would recomend this book for everyone to read for sure. And I'm not even an avid reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring story of courage and faith in God, June 19, 2005
This review is from: Escape in Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story (Hardcover)
This is a good book by a humble man. It is more than a story about a man captured by terrorists in Iraq. It is a story about how Thomas Hamill's unshaking faith in God probably saved his life. Most people in the same situation probably would have lost their composure and showed fear. But Hamill's ability to leave his fate in God's hands allowed him to maintain his presence of mind which enabled him to build a little trust with his captors and in the end, allowed his escape. It is an inspiring story.
