Book Description

December 20, 2000
When the Shah of Iran is overthrown, that nation's turmoil captures the world's attention. Caught in this shifting world of fanaticism, ambition, duplicity, heartbreak and violent death are the foreign helicopter pilots who have been servicing the oilfields up and down the country. Their one objective now is to make a bold concerted escape, with their helicopters, to safety across the Gulf. Clavell told the story of the three weeks it took them to achieve this in his 1986 bestseller WHIRLWIND. In ESCAPE he has taken out just one poignant thread from that epic narrative. The result is the moving and tender love story of Erikki, the blond Finnish pilot, and his beautiful high-born Iranian wife, Azadeh, whom he loves beyond safety and beyond politics.

"Mr. Clavell is a master writer who studies the subject well and then weaves the story." (Amazon.com)

From AudioFile

Foreign helicopter pilots are planning their escape from Iran now that the Shah has been removed from power in this novel derived from Clavell's 1986 bestseller WHIRLWIND. A Finnish pilot and his Iranian bride find their love being tested as they attempt to escape the political and religious upheaval that ensues. A barrage of nationalities must be managed in narrating this epic. John Lee delivers accents with precision and makes clear distinctions between characters. However, Lee's narration lacks the emotion essential to such a dramatic story. His monotone changes just slightly during a segment of thrilling action or incredible tension. Unfortunately, his reading doesn't give this saga the drama it is due. J.A.K. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

3.0 out of 5 stars rip off, sorry but it's true., April 19, 2000
While anything with Clavell's name attached to it is simply marvelous - and don't get me wrong, this is still a wonderful story - this is just the incomplete, chopped up, TV version of his incredible book 'Whirlwind.' There is nothing new; don't let the 'love story' bit fool you. Entire plots and characters are left out, or are mentioned only in passing. There is no intelligent reason to buy this book. Buy Whirlwind instead. Coronet Books has managed to take money from me for an incomplete version of a book I have already read. Disgusting. Three stars is very, very generous.

2.0 out of 5 stars Watered down Whirlwind..., May 29, 2000
By
Todd (Hartsville, SC USA) - See all my reviews
Unfortunately, James Clavell and his publisher fought during the last few years of his life. The result was that his final Asian saga novel, Whirlwind, is out of print. Escape is a watered down version of that novel, developed for a movie script. The core story is still there, but to get Clavell's intended story, buy Whirlwind at a used bookstore or online auction site.

1.0 out of 5 stars Escape, travesty and a waste of money!, March 25, 2006
This novel is a travesty and should never have been published. I am so sorry that any of my money went to a company, Coronet, that would render such a great author's work into a chopped up mess. Read Whirlwind, it is great and essentially you will get two books for one if you believe that Escape is one unto itself ( I obviously don't). I was expecting further elaboration upon the story line of Azadeh and Erikki but it is just each section that pertains to them chopped out of Whirlwind and put into a separate novel, butchers!
