Fascinating book about one family's experience of the Holocaust in Norway, June 25, 2009
This review is from: Escape: A Jewish Scandinavian Family in the Second World War (Hardcover)
This is a fascinating book about a family's escape from Norway during World War II. The stories of many countries, like France, Denmark, and Poland, are well known, but this book takes us to Oslo and the horrors visited upon the small Jewish population there by the invading Nazis. It also includes new information about the Danish Consul in Copenhagen who worked selflessly to save some of the Norwegian Jews, including the author's mother. All of this is painstakingly researched and historically accurate, yet written as the story of a family, the members of which each found a different way to escape, each with a unique story. This is must reading for anyone interested in the Holocaust, particularly if they think that the Scandinavian experience can be summed up by the actions of Denmark and the Danish rescue. A beautiful book.
