More About the Author

On leaving university I worked in the chemical industry for many years, a rewarding occupation, although writing was always my main love. At the time I had to support a mortgage, a wife and two small children so the idea of becoming a full time author remained a dream until recently when I took the opportunity to jump ship and start writing for real.

I went back to the stories I told to my children when they were little. I found they loved stories about dragons, wizards, fairies, goblins, giants, talking animals so together we made up a world of fantasy. I showed them how to use the magic words what if?
Here's how it works: One day I was inspecting a turkey farm and was amazed at the hundreds of Christmas turkeys gobbling around the floor of a huge barn. What, I thought, if one of those turkeys was an incredibly intelligent bird and very different from all those other turkeys in the barn. So it was that Wiffen the most intelligent turkey in the world was created and what a preposterous creature he turned out to be. (The Adventures of Titch and Mitch - Shipwrecked.)

What if the huge hedge that ran alongside a holiday home we once rented in Wales was really hiding a mysterious and forbidden land inhabited by strange creatures? This led to an exciting adventure book called Escape from Mercy Hall, which turned into a trilogy.

What if there really was treasure at the end of a rainbow? (The Adventures of Titch and Mitch - The Trolls of Sugar Loaf Wood.)

What if the field mouse we spotted at the end of the garden was really a tiny dragon that could breathe fire? (The Adventures of Titch and Mitch - Shipwrecked.)

And so it goes on.....

What a genuinely amusing and original read. Who doesn't love a story about runaway orphans, especially when they happen upon a magical world. This story is well written and I think you would be hard pressed to find a child who wouldn't like it. And bonus factor, there is artwork!! All the great creatures the children meet also bring a magical touch to this book. The pace of the book was strong and never seemed to dull. I can definitely see Escape from Mercy Hall as a real page turner for children.

Although my 9 year old daughter wasn't as enthused with this book, I started reading the book and it is pretty good. The book does move slow at first and may be why she lost interest. I would recommend this book for late elementary through maybe middle school children.

This book is intended for ages 9-14, however I have to say I even enjoyed reading it and I'm in my 30's.

A group of kids wonder out in the middle of the night and go beyond the hedge. The next thing they know the hedge closes and they are in a strange and almost scarey land. They've been told it's dangerous beyond the hedge and to never leave. One of their first experiences is a horse drawn carriage but it's not pulled by a horse, it's directed by an electrical current under the ground. From there, things get stranger and more dangerous.

I found the book moved slow at first and then I found I couldn't stop reading it. I wanted to know more. I wanted to see these kids succeed and stay safe. I was holding my breath through parts of it. I even caught myself thinking I was in the book with these kids.

I can see this story becoming a great movie. There was so much imagery and action, the movie would have you wanting to watch more.

The book is the first of the Thorn Gate trilogy. I can't wait to get my hands on the next two. If you enjoy futuristic, thrillers with a lot of adventure I think you will love this book too.

This is a fun book that is geared more for grade-school to middle-school children. When I first decided upon looking at Escape From Mercy Hall, I had know my intentions were to read it aloud to all my kids. What I didn't realize was how fast of a read it was going to be.

From the very beginning it captures readers, both young and old. The action in the book never lulls for a moment. We ended up reading it in two nights, half the book each night. The kids loved it, even my 3 year old listened intently. As the everything was described so well-you could picture each person, critter, or scene perfectly in your mind. {I am sure adding different voices to the characters helped and that I did a lot of animation as I was reading, my little one was just as attentive as all my other kids}. Personally, being able to act a book out is a huge plus and I didn't even have to try that hard.

I did have to joke with them a bit, telling them they were going to have a chicken slice and cold porridge for the holidays-as this was stated in the first few pages of the book. Each of my kids looked at me wide-eyed as they asked if the things that were mentioned about the conditions in the orphanage that the characters in the book lived. Trust me when I say they will not be getting that meal. The description of the orphanage and the world on the other side of the hedge were truly amazing.

Without giving to much more away, I would like to recommend this book to any young child or young adult that loves to read adventure-fantasy novels. I am sure this would make for a great stocking stuffer,
