4.0 out of 5 stars Let's Escape, April 11, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Escape North! The Story of Harriet Tubman (Step-Into-Reading, Step 3) (Paperback)
We are four girls in second grade who read this book. It is a really good book. It has excitement, and we learned a lot about Harriet Tubman. She was born in 1820 and died in 1913. She was 93 when she died. Here are some comments: "I liked the part when Harriet was going to escape and she followed Daddy Ben's instructions." "She was so happy when she saw Old Rit and Daddy Ben again."

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but skips the Canada Connection, October 29, 2009
This review is from: Escape North! The Story of Harriet Tubman (Step-Into-Reading, Step 3) (Paperback)
An easy reader chapter book briefly tells the story of Harriet Tubman's life and her heroic deeds to save other slaves by bringing them to Canada and later on her part in the Civil War. A good majority of the book is spent on her life as a child, and life before she escaped slavery so children can get to know her as a person first before they learn she is a hero. My only quibble is that the whole Canadian connection is skipped. The word Canada appears once in the book "take the group on to Canada".

Fortunately we live very close to where she lived in Canada and were able to visit the church where Tubman brought the slaves on (I forget whether it was 17 or 19) separate journeys she made down south and back again via the Underground Railroad.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Educational Resource of African-American History, January 30, 2010
This review is from: Escape North! The Story of Harriet Tubman (Step-Into-Reading, Step 3) (Paperback)
They called her Moses. Harriet Tubman led her people out of slavery to freedom just as Moses led the Israelite slaves to the Promised Land in the Bible (see the book of Genesis). It was 1851 and Harriet Tubman was the conductor on the Underground Railroad. Not a railroad with trains that carried cargo. A secret route that slaves traveled to escape from the plantations in the South. The underground railroad led them to the northern states where slavery was against the law. Harriet Tubman made the journey to freedom first, then came back to guide other slaves. They stayed in safe houses - stations with people who risked their own lives to help the slaves. The biography Escape North!, The Story of Harriet Tubman does more than just share facts about this remarkable and courageous woman. In gripping yet easy-to-understand prose, the author paints a picture of the hardships Tubman endured. In one dramatic scene, Tubman is dashing through the icy Choptank River, hoping the water will throw the hunting dogs off her scent. But the hounds get closer and closer. If captured, she would be severely whipped or even killed! Miraculously Tubman finds a hollow log in which to hide just as the slave catchers and dogs gallop past her. Harriet Tubman made numerous missions to rescue hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad...and this woman called the Moses of her people "never ran her train off the track" and "never lost a passenger!" This is an exciting educational resource for early readers learning African-American history.
