5.0 out of 5 stars Storyline ...., July 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: To Escape the Stars (Mass Market Paperback)
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Just how far would a money-loving freesailer go to find the master key to every planet in the galaxy? And how would he get back? ... when freesailer, plunderer James Oregas and his beautiful business partner set out to bilk the unsuspecting denizens of the backwater planet Llango ... it got complicated ... when Jamas, who knew the ins and out of stargates was doublecrossed and had to disappear -- and fast, it moved into high gear ... when Jamas landed on Prime -- a repository planet of galactic history -- and learned of a mysterious lost race that held the master key to all the stargates for all the worlds ... when Jamas himself decided to scour the galaxy, looking for that long-lost race, following a trail that would lead him to power beyond his wildest dreams -- if he somehow managed to stay alive!"

3.0 out of 5 stars When Books Were Novel Length, June 13, 2005
By
Antinomian (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To Escape the Stars (Mass Market Paperback)
This book almost falls under the genre of Conan The Barbarian, just with stargates. Written in 1978 its almost a primer for the tv series and is so close in some ways they may have 'ripped' parts of it. The book was written back when books were usually under 200 pages so a lot more happens with fewer words. A key enemy may die within a phrase of a short paragraph and you have to go back to reread it if you skipped over it. The key character is a rogue freelancer and the novel includes nice details of horses and riding over countrysides albeit with stargates at journeys beginning and end. Not a science fiction foundation novel but good for a quick entertaining read.
