Sensible Fitness and Lifestyle!,

Like many of my friends I have followed this expert's advice and books and gotten nothing but results; end of story. His programs work and make sense. Anyone can follow these programs. This book is more of the same.I have lost weight, toned, and gotten FIT, plain and simple. The exercise regimens are easy to follow. Before I used heavy weight & machines along with years of aerobics that did nothing but bulk me up. You will want to do these routines because they produce visible results in a short time, so you will stick to them. These programs can be implemented easily and are good for the non exerciser to the athlete, thin or overweight, he covers the gamut succinctly and logically. These are simple & sound approaches to eating well, exercising and living a healthy lifestyle; a nice concept to follow. This author tells it like it is; quite refreshing. Now I have a great shape that I am proud of.

The author of "Escape Your Shape", Edward Jackowski is back with a food focused plan to help you "Escape Your Weight". Essentially the book operates on the basic calories in, calories out premise. The author first asks you to select the type of weight loss plan you can live with. Do you want to exercise as little as possible? Or would you rather alter your eating habits only slightly and exercise more? Once you have made your selection, you zero in on the amount of weight you want to lose. Jackowski stresses a healthy, natural diet. Slow, steady weight loss. He does tell you how to kick your weight loss into high gear and lose more weight quicker BUT he also tells you that you may burn out that way and you are better off losing it slowly and permanently. Jackowski also gives an exercise prescription for weight loss. These plans vary, but a typical day may include a warm-up, stretch, fat burner (like jumpe rope), upper body exercise, jumping jacks, hip work, abs and legs, etc. I really appreciate Jackowski's honestly. He doesn't sugar coat the truth. If you want to get slim, you are going to have to work at it FOREVER. Not for a few weeks out of the year, FOREVER. Jackowski gives eating plans for each calorie level and you are not to deviate from the plan. I like the fact that you can choose your meal choice and are given about 7 meal selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner to choose from BUT its a diet and with only 7 selections that could get limiting long term. One thing that always inspires me with a diet book is the testimonials and Jackowski's got a bunch of them with pictures at the back of the book. But there was one MAJOR problem with the testimonials, they all followed the authors EXERCISE plan but few of them followed his EATING plan which is what "Escape Your Weight" is supposed to be about. Ed also gives lots of tips throughout the 328 page book. Its well written and it includes a number of black and white photographs to illustrate the exercises and testimonials. There is also a section with advise on how to lose that last 10 pounds. Bottomline I would recommend this book for anyone who needs some commonsense weight loss advise. Just don't expect a miracle cus there isn't one out there!

A Must Read for Anyone Looking To Lose Weight!,

I am a nurse in a major metropolitan hospital and I personally treat and see thousands of overweight people on a daily basis. In addition, I have treated many gastric bypass & gastrectomy patients. Personally, I was about 20 pounds overweight when I came across Dr. Jackowski's book when he appeared on a Fox News channel interview on the common mistakes people make when attempting to lose weight. What I loved about the book is that it gave me options as to how much I needed to exercise combined with how I could decrease my calories on a daily basis. Now 20 pounds lighter, I now know why I was never able to lose my weight. First off, i was doing all the wrong types of exercises, lifting heavy weights, doing spin classes and trying to build more muscle by lifting weights. What I didn't know was that I was actually increasing my size and weight because of my misexercise coupled with the fact that I actually wasn't eating enough and thus, was slowing down my metabolism. In short, it has been nearly 3 months now and I am finally at a comfortable weight, I feel confident that I can maintain without starving myself or over exercising. I reccommend this book for anyone who has been unsuccessful in previous attempts at weight loss. I also learned so much about exercise; why certain exercises are more effective for weight loss and which ones are not. I am now more educated on how to eat properly by not skipping meals and realize the perils of "starving" yourself with no long-lasting results! Without this book I would still be facing each day with no plan or hope, this book has guided me to a healthier and happier me!

A truly helpful guide to successful weight loss!!,

This review is from: Escape Your Weight: Diets and Exercise Alone Won't Work, This Proven Plan Will! (Hardcover)
Finally, a sensible book to guide you to your healthy weight and help you maintain that healthy weight forever. Dr. Edward Jackowski is a master teacher and motivator and he offers the reader a choice of three approaches--all combining a well-balanced diet with either a 1)maximal exercise program 2)minimal exercise program or 3)moderate exercise program. You choose the plan and he then maps out your diet regimen and your exercise prescription in a clear, orderly fashion. Jackowski writes with penetrating insight into the human personality and also with a great deal of humor. Along the way, he explains why fad diets and fad "exercise" claims are dangerous and why they don't work in the long run. So this book is valuable not only because it is a "great read", but because the plan works. The plan has certainly worked for me. I chose the first option--exercising 5 times per week and tweaking my diet according to Jackowski's suggestions and I reached my desired weight goal and have maintained the weight loss on his plan. I do a full-body workout twice a week and a cardio workout three times per week--each session, including warm-up, stretching, ab work, workload, and cool down under 55 minutes. Jackowski believes in "smart exercise" and he teaches you how to be efficient. The goal of his plan is a sensible, balanced diet combined with a sensible, balanced exercise plan that works for you. You choose and Dr. Jackowski takes you through your plan step-by-step. Along the way, I think you will realize that the "escape your weight" plan works because it's based on common sense--what Jackowski calls "thinking inside the box." Somehow we all know that the "secret" to a healthy lifestyle is a consistent exercise plan coupled with a balanced, nutritious eating plan. Jackowski has unlocked the "secret" and he will teach it to you, motivating you along the way with a great deal of humor, expertise and compassion.

What happened to the body types?,
By Puzzled in Portland (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Escape Your Weight: Diets and Exercise Alone Won't Work, This Proven Plan Will! (Hardcover)
I'm scratching my head after comparing some of the claims made in this book with Jackowski's previous one, Escape Your Shape. The whole basis of Escape Your Shape was that different body types (hourglass, spoon, ruler, or cone) should focus on different exercises. For example, hourglass and spoon types should avoid doing squats and lunges, because they will create bulky thigh and glute muscles. This is mentioned in passing in Escape Your Weight, but the exercise prescriptions in each section do not include any recommended modifications to tailor the regimes to the different body types. Since this was the main point that was hammered home in Escape Your Shape, I think that the author loses some credibility by not addressing the issue. Apart from that, there's some good and current information about fitness and nutrition. I do like the different options for balancing more conscientious eating with less intense exercise and vice versa, and the increasingly more intense workouts for people nearing their weight goals.

Good eating plan, but way too complicated...,

This review is from: Escape Your Weight: Diets and Exercise Alone Won't Work, This Proven Plan Will! (Hardcover)
The 63 used books starting at $3.49 speaks for itself. This book is full of ego and complete ignorance of what 'normal' people go through to lose weight and exercise. The only part of this book that I agreed with was the eating plan, which is more common sense than anything else. After reading only the first chapter, I was completely turned off to this guy--it's his way or you're stupid--no kidding.
If you're looking for some incentive and compassion, don't look here. What Mr. Jackowski gives is the attitude of "it's your own fault you look the way you do and whatever you're doing to lose weight and exercise is WRONG". Walking isn't good enough. If you use weights, that's wrong also. He does, however, have info about how you can purchase HIS workout equipment... His workout involves 11 steps (yes, 11): 1. Use a stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical machine or cross trainer for 30 minutes with high speed. 2. Stretch for 4 minutes. 3. Jump rope (yea, right) or jump on a trampoline for 1 minute, then do 3 minutes of biking, walking, jogging or aerobics with moderate intensity. 4. Do floor exercises (he lists them w/ pictures) for legs/hips. 5. Do 40 to 50 jumping jacks. 6. Do upper body floor exercises. 7. Jump rope or jump on a trampoline for 1 minute, then do 3 minutes of biking, walking, jogging or aerobics with moderate intensity. 8. Do ab/leg floor exercises. 9. Jump rope or jump on a trampoline for 1 minute, then do 3 minutes of biking, walking, jogging or aerobics with moderate intensity. 10. Do 40 to 50 jumping jacks. 11. Cooldown by doing 3 minutes of biking or leisurely walking. Got all that? If you claim that you don't have time to do this every day, he's got quite the tongue lashing for you. I think I'll stick with my walking, hand weights and workout videos. I thought maybe there was something I might be missing (I got the book for $3), but this book made me realize that I'm NOT missing out on life by working out for 2 hours a day...
