4.0 out of 5 stars Can't help but root for the main characters! July 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received an ebook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not usually drawn to "steampunk" stories and typically stay away from them. When Ms. Knight contacted me asking for a review, I thought I'd give it a shot. The premise sounded interested and I wanted to see what would happen to Semara, given that everyone hates her.

The story had a shaky start. I wasn't sure what was going on, how the groups of people were distinguished from one another, and how this world was structured. I'm a big world building fan and we didn't get much of that at the beginning. The copy I received for review was an eARC copy and the point of view tended to shift mid paragraph. ESCAPEMENT is told from Semara's point of view but then it would switch to third person, using the word "she." I think this may just have been because I received an unpolished version.

After Semara refuses to sacrifice a "parasite," as her mother, the Queen, calls the Neumarian people, she is thrown into a prison cell to become a slave. She is rescued by Ryder and is brought into the Mining Territory to freedom. The Queen's wrath is imminent and Semara, along with Ryder, and his sister Raeth, are forced to escape the Wasteland and get overseas. They are the Neumarians only hope for freedom and rebellion from the Queen's tyranny.

I must admit, after Semara was rescued, the story did pick up a bit. I became more interested in what was going on and I actually could understand everything that was happening. The writing got better. The details surrounding the people and the town were clearer. Ms. Knight found her flow, so to speak. This novel was very action-packed. It seems like every time the trio thought they were safe, something bad happened again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't expecting Steampunk August 27, 2013
Format:Paperback
The year is 2195, ten years after the great war of 2185 that killed everything and left the land dry and inhabitable. The queen's reign is being threatened by an uprising from those that are mistreated and less fortunate including humans, Neumarians and Kiantians sympathizer. In celebration of Kiantian Princess Semara's 16th birthday, it is her duty as a princess to sacrifice/kill a slave in order to be initiated into the ruling council and solidifying her crazy mother's empire. When her own erratic powers surface, she is captured and tried for treason and of course her mother is the judge, jury and executioner. Semara is found guilty and ordered to undergo an extremely painful procedure. Slaves hate her, her crazy mother wants her dead and her only chance of survival rest in the hands of a young very handsome and fit Neumarian man, Ryder, whose sister, Raeth, was tortured and sentenced to death four years earlier by Semara.

If I hadn't read the novella of Escapement, I would have been ...airships..., portholes....mechanical body parts... what the heck?!. But I did read it and was better prepared on what to expect when I started reading "Escapement". I came to the understanding and conclusion that this was a Steampunk, YA, Fantasy Dystopia Romance story. It wasn't mentioned in the summary, nor was it listed under the different Genres, therefore fair warning it's Steampunk ladies and gentlemen. I myself enjoy Steampunk as long as the story/plot is good and Escapement was. For those of you that do not enjoy the Steampunk Genre, then this might not be for you. Perhaps you might want to pick up the novella "Weighted the Neumarian Chronicles 0.5" to see if it might be something for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars YA Dystopian October 3, 2013
Format:Paperback
The first book in the Neumarian Chronicles, Escapement (all of the books in the series are named after clock parts), is a YA dystopian set in 2190s after a devastating war has leveled modern civilization. The remaining humans are broken down into two major groups: Kiantan (normal but ability to handle tech upgrades) and Neumarian (enhanced psi abilities). The Neumarians are controlled to ensure they don't 'destroy humanity' ever again. Or so Semara, daughter of the ruling Kiantan Queen, is taught.

When Semara is to join the ruling council by 'sacrificing a parasite' Neumarian on her birthday, she will face a decision that could kill her. The girl chosen to be murdered by Semara is someone she was supposed to have already killed - and the Queen isn't going to be happy at the betrayal. Saved by Raeth, the girl she let be tortured to near death, and Raeth's over protective older brother Ryder, Semaria will set out on a quest to overthrow her mother and bring peace back to the land. All the while keeping Ryder in the dark about what she did to his sister. Along the way, she will develop her own Neumarian talent - and discover a history about herself of which she could never have dreamed.

Escapement is an easy read suitable for early teens who like a plucky heroine and adventure/road story. The world in Escapement is imaginative and the author sets up quite a few surprises for our heroes. The read is undemanding and easy to follow. If I have one criticism, there was a bit too much going on - and so character building falls a bit on the wayside. But the author has left a lot of room for more interesting reveals about our character and I look forward to reading Book 2.

Received as an ARC from the author.
