The first book in the Neumarian Chronicles, Escapement (all of the books in the series are named after clock parts), is a YA dystopian set in 2190s after a devastating war has leveled modern civilization. The remaining humans are broken down into two major groups: Kiantan (normal but ability to handle tech upgrades) and Neumarian (enhanced psi abilities). The Neumarians are controlled to ensure they don't 'destroy humanity' ever again. Or so Semara, daughter of the ruling Kiantan Queen, is taught.
When Semara is to join the ruling council by 'sacrificing a parasite' Neumarian on her birthday, she will face a decision that could kill her. The girl chosen to be murdered by Semara is someone she was supposed to have already killed - and the Queen isn't going to be happy at the betrayal. Saved by Raeth, the girl she let be tortured to near death, and Raeth's over protective older brother Ryder, Semaria will set out on a quest to overthrow her mother and bring peace back to the land. All the while keeping Ryder in the dark about what she did to his sister. Along the way, she will develop her own Neumarian talent - and discover a history about herself of which she could never have dreamed.
Escapement is an easy read suitable for early teens who like a plucky heroine and adventure/road story. The world in Escapement is imaginative and the author sets up quite a few surprises for our heroes. The read is undemanding and easy to follow. If I have one criticism, there was a bit too much going on - and so character building falls a bit on the wayside. But the author has left a lot of room for more interesting reveals about our character and I look forward to reading Book 2.
