Book Description

September 4, 2012
An eight-year journey through the occult and into freedom
Though Kristine McGuire was raised in a Christian home, at an early age she became fascinated by the occult. At sleepovers she and her friends told fortunes and held séances. As a teenager she was convicted and put all games of mysticism aside. She went to a Christian college and married a Christian man. But despite her decision to follow God, a longing for the occult persisted, leading her to leave her church and husband and to fully embrace witchcraft.

Escaping the Cauldron takes you deep inside Kristine’s eight-year journey as a witch, medium, and ghost hunter. Part Bible study, part memoir, it exposes the subtle occult influences that affect us as it reveals how God mercifully delivered her out of the occult altogether and restored her faith and life in Christ.

Escaping the Cauldron: Exposing occult influences in everyday life by Kristine McGuire is a book I received to read and review. Many thanks to Glass Road Public Relations for the opportunity to review this book. My review of this book is an honest representation of my experience, thoughts and personal views.

In this book, Kristine McGuire writes about the occult, her experiences as a Christian Witch, how God delivered her and just how increasingly the occult is can be found in our every days lives. Even more shocking is how the occult is becoming more and more present in the Christian faith and church!

I was stunned at how quickly just even ONE innocent activity can open just a small fissure that if left unnoticed, can lead to temptation and decisions that may seem innocent in the beginning but can so easily lead us down a down a path away from God.

Kristine's references of Biblical scripture sheds understanding and light on so much that I did not know about God's view of the occult. I really respect that she doesn't judge or condemn as she tells her story. She just honestly, openly shares her experiences along with God's work and salvation in her and her family's lives.

At the end of each chapter are Biblical verses for personal study and review as well as thought provoking questions that helps the reader begin to explore and seek God's will in our lives. They were invaluable to the full experience of this book.

~ My thoughts ~

I found this book to be enlightening, educational and one of the BEST sources of scriptural references from the Bible regarding God's stand on the occult! God laid some convictions on my heart while I was reading this book.

The descriptions of the occult and Kristine's experiences are in depth and openly shared. At times I felt that she didn't need to go into such detail about some of her experiences. Overall though, her descriptions really gave me a clear and better understanding of what she experienced and God's grace and love that changed her life.

I highly recommend reading Escaping the Cauldron: Exposing occult influences in everyday life!

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Escape From an Occult September 30, 2012
Format:Paperback
In this memoir, author Kristine McGuire tells her story about her fall from Christ, her dabble into the occult, and her new found freedom. The interest in the occult first occurred when she was a kid. She would play fortune-teller with her friends by reading each others' palms. She would drag out a clear plastic baby toy and use it as a crystal ball.

After attending a Christian college, marring a Christian man, and becoming a mother, she still had an interest in the occult even though she was still a follower of God. Kristine started reading books on witchcraft and the occult. For eight years she devoured her life into the occult, until she suddenly realized that it wasn't the life for her and she made her way back to being a Christian.

When I was offered to review this book from Glass Road Media, I had to say yes. I don't know too much about the occult except for what I have seen in horror movies and on reality series, such as Ghost Hunters, so I was interested in reading the memoir. The author writes about the years she left Christ and dabbed in witchcraft, became a medium and a ghost hunter, and eventually returned to Christ. I have never heard about a Christian falling into the occult world. The author gives a lot of wisdom on the subject. After every chapter there are four to five questions to ask yourself about what you have just read. The paranormal, vampires, and ghost-hunting are popular in pop culture, which can be both good and harmful to a person, especially a Christian. Overall, I enjoyed reading the book and I recommend it to all Christians, clergyman, churches, and anyone interested in learning how to leave an occult.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ghost hunter in search of ghostwriter! October 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
I am an avid reader and I heard about this book through a friend. I especially enjoy reading books that demonstrate the redemption power of God and writers who can communicate their experiences and message in an articulate and tangible manner. Now I know that to say anything negative about such a book can come across callous because it would seem to be an attack on a prodigal who comes back to our Loving God. So, it is important for the readers to separate the sharing of scripture and testimony, from the craft of writing. In saying that, I always give God a BIG 5 stars because of His mercy to save us in any story, and His book, the Bible, a BIG 5 as well! But, since we are not reviewing the Bible, we must focus on the book, Escaping the Cauldron. That said I give this book 2 stars.

I felt the writing sounded pretentious, as in trying to persuade readers she is an expert in her field, repeatedly referencing former witch, medium, and ghost hunter as if trying to convince us and herself, by her spooky childhood and internet occult involvement.

The book shares no new knowledge and seems to contain information Kristine rehashed already on the market. There were many fragmented sentences and misused words, which concerns me being a product of a professional publishing house. The book lacked flow and was repetitious; bouncing her experiences through the three spiritual hats she wore. Even at the end of the book, it seemed the publishers were adding filler material after Chapter 28 to stretch the book beyond 200 pages.

I feel she has an interesting story that would have benefited from a well experience ghostwriter to bring it to life and make it a more enjoyable read.
