This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Hardcover)
Peg Kehret has written many wonderful books and she is well known for her "disaster" books. This is one of the best books Kehret has ever written. I could not put it down. Kyle Davidson is winding up his 6th grade year when his father wins a vacation to Oregon. the family is excited about staying on the beautiful Oregon coast in a luxury hotel. When they arrive, they find the accommodations are not what they expected. Still the beach is beautiful and Kyle and his sister BeeBee are enjoying their stay until bully Daren Hazelton and his family arrive. The reader knows as the family reads the warning sign about tsunamis that they are going to be running for their lives before the book is over. His sister BeeBee is a great character. Terrific and exciting read.

Who will escape fast enough?,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Paperback)
A thirteen-year old boy named Kyle thought spending a vacation along the Oregon Coast with his family would be a great experience. He'd never flown before and he'd never seen the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
Kyle's perfect vacation becomes his worst nightmare while he's baby-siting his six-year old sister Bee Bee. An earthquake hits the coast and starts an enourmous fire in his hotel he's staying in. While fighting his way smoke and flame, Kyle had remembered seeing a sign on the beach that stated....After an earthquake everyone should go uphill and inland, as far from the ocean as possible. Tsunamis' giant waves that often follow through earthquakes can ride in from the sea and engulf anyone who doesn't escape fast enough!

"Sexy Beasts" review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Paperback)
Imagine that you were a thirteen year old kid that went on a vacation by the pacific ocean. well read Escaping the giant wave and you'll experience what Kyle did on the Oregon coast. The book Escaping the giant wave is about a 13 year old kid named Kyle that thought that spending a vacation by the Oregon Coast was gonna be great, everything changed when he was baby sitting his little sister Beebee. They were alone and their parents had gone to a business meeting on a yacht in the Pacific Ocean. While their parents weren't home they were having fun in their hotel room until an earthquake struck, the earthquake had started a fire in the hotel that they were staying in, while trying to escape the hotel they were struggling between fire and smoke. When they got out of the hotel they remembered seeing a sign in the beach that said when an earthquake hits run uphill because there might be a chance of a tsunami. Kyle and BeeBee ran uphill and met two wonderful people. The tsunami struck and they were safe in the woods. When the tsunami was over they went back down the hill and were looking for their parents since they were in the middle of the ocean. They found their parents and flew back home. The author is Peg Kehret, she might have written the book because she likes to write books about kids who find themselves in extraordinary situations and use their wits to solve their problems. Peg Kehret always says "Reading is thinking with someone else's head instead of your own, the child that reads is the one who succeeds." I think that she is trying to say that if you pretend to read you aren't reading with your head, but if you do read you are the one that succeeds in everything. I would recommend this book to kids 10 - 13 years old because there is a 13 year old character and also because I think that they will have fun experiencing Kyle's adventure.

My son is 9, and this is his review.....People who would like this book are people who like action. I like the book because it is about a brother and sister that go on a trip to Oregon. The parents go on a cruise, so the brother is watching the sister. Then an earthquake hits. It's very suspensful and a little scary. I could picture myself in this situation. It helped me see how good my life is compared to theirs. I highly recommend the book.

If you want to read an exciting book about two kids running for their lives this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Escaping the Giant Wave is an adventure fiction book by Peg Kehret. This book takes place on Kyle Davidson's summer break at the Totem Pole Inn is Northwest Oregon.
In the beginning of this book Kyle's parents won a trip to the coast of Oregon. Next Kyle and his sister, Bee-Bee, witnessed a tsunami while their parents were out on a dinner cruise. Would they be safe alone? Would their parents ever find them? You HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK ro find out what happens to Kyle and Bee-Bee. The theme of this story is be alert to signs. They are put there for a reason. This book reminded me of the big tsunami that hit Thailand 1 1/2 years ago. Boys and girls who are 4th-5th grade would love this book! M.H. in Annapolis

Hayley's Reveiw,

This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Paperback)
This book is about a family going on a business trip for their father. Before they went, Kyle for the first time ever babysat his little sister BeeBee. Kyle is a big brother who is in the 6th grade. He has brown hair and blue eyes. Kyle always gets picked on by a boy named Daren since kindergarten. He needs to make 4 goals this summer. BeeBee is a little girl and she is interested in math. She has blue eyes and brown hair like her big brother. When they were at the hotel it was not finished so they had to stay at a broken down old hotel next door. The family decided to go to the beach. When Kyle was finished with his picture made of sand and shells something hit him. It ended up that Daren came too! Later, up in the room, Kyle's mom had asked him to babysit BeeBee. But, there's an earthquake while their mom and dad are on a yacht eating dinner! Then a giant wave hits. This is a very exciting book and when you have to stop reading it you can't .You don't want to stop until it's finished. Every page you read is full of feelings, and just like that you are in the book. It's like you are really there doing the same thing.

Chelsea's Review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Paperback)
Kyle Davidson went on a trip with his family to Oregon. He is so happy to go because he wanted to get away from a kid named Daren Hazelton and he is the school bully. When they got to Oregon Kyle found out that Daren went on a trip to Oregon and also found out that Daren was staying in the same motel as him! Kyle's parents had to go on a business trip and leave him and his little sister BeeBee in the motel by themselves with Daren in the motel. Kyle had to watch BeeBee and he couldn't leave her side unless it was in his motel room. While they were alone in the motel they ordered pizza and milkshakes. BeeBee accidentally spilled her pizza and milkshake. While Kyle was cleaning up the mess, the ground started to shake. Then they just remembered the beach sign warning about tsunami's, so they decide to get out of the motel. They find Daren passed out on the stairs because of smoke from a fire in the motel. Kyle and BeeBee started dragging Daren down the stairs. Suddenly they realize that a tsunami is coming, without Kyle and BeeBee's parents he has to save himself and BeeBee. He told Daren to go up hill with him and BeeBee because that is a safe place to be during a tsunami but Daren wouldn't listen to Kyle and BeeBee.
I like this book because it is interesting and it makes me feel anxious about what's going to happen next and I like feeling like that. It teaches you when someone is trying to help you , you should take that help from that person. Also it teaches you not to be a bully.

Erika's Reveiw,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Escaping the Giant Wave (Paperback)
The main characters are a kid named Kyle Davidson, his little sister BeeBee, and the school bully, Daren Hazelton. One day, Kyle and his family go on a vacation to Oregon. Kyle's parents go out and Kyle has to baby-sit BeeBee at the Motel 6. When Kyle orders pizza and some drinks, BeeBee accidentally spills her milkshake. While Kyle was cleaning up the mess, he felt the floor shaking. His dream vacation was becoming a nightmare. Then, Kyle smelled smoke in the hallway of the Motel 6. He opened the room door and Kyle yelled,"FIRE!" Then Kyle saw Daren, the school bully there too. Once he saw the fire, he, Daren, and BeeBee were running down the stairs when all of a sudden, Daren passes out because of the smoke. Kyle realized that a tsunami was coming right after the fire was over!
I love this book because it made me feel happy, sad, and VERY FREAKED OUT!! This book teaches older siblings that when you go somewhere, and the school bully or an enemy is there and somethings is going wrong, you should still help him or her even if you don't like them or they are your best friend. |
