While I have never suffered from domestic violence, I have compassion for those who have. As I read Kathleen's story, she took me from a place of confinement and fear, to freedom and strength. I followed her journey with earnest and read as she slowly "escaped her glass cage". A must read for all women in such circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Courage to Create a New LIfe, February 21, 2010
This review is from: Escaping the Glass Cage: A Story of Survival & Empowerment from Domestic Violence (Paperback)
Kathleen Schmidt's story is one that happens way too much all over the world. Every day, women (and men) live in fear for their life and the lives of their children. Every day, they wonder what will happen next and if there is hope for a way out.

Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing your story and confirming that this type of behavior doesn't usually get better or go away. And, an even bigger "thank you" for having the courage to leave and create the life of your dreams. May your story and your strength help others to not only walk out the door, but to run to a new life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Both touching and inspiring!, January 21, 2010
This review is from: Escaping the Glass Cage: A Story of Survival & Empowerment from Domestic Violence (Paperback)
Kathleen's story of surviving and escaping abuse will equally touch and inspire you, regardless of your personal situation. What she illustrates so beautifully is her ability to not only overcome horrible circumstances but for us all to know that we can shape our lives as she did her life into one where we are empowered and limitless in our options, and most of all, happy.

This book is an excellent read. It provides insight into a survivor's point of view of why she tolerated the abuse, and how she developed as a human being to break free from the cycle. There is also great information near the back that can help someone who is in that situation take steps to sucessfully claim their own victories. I found it most inspirational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finding Empowerment, March 25, 2010
This review is from: Escaping the Glass Cage: A Story of Survival & Empowerment from Domestic Violence (Paperback)
The author of Escaping the Glass Cage, Kathleen M. Schmidt, has survived domestic violence that was literally a life-and-death experience. She has not only survived, but has thrived as an author and advocate, wife and mother. It's hard to realize how close Ms. Schmidt came to either ending her life, or having it end by the hands of her (ex) husband.

Escaping the Glass Cage is a short book with a big message. Domestic abuse is rampant in our society. It is estimated that one in three women will experience some form of abuse in her lifetime. People often ask, "Why doesn't she leave?" when the question could be, "Why didn't he stop?" Most likely than not, the abuse stops only if/when she leaves. Kathleen provides the reader with her account of how she planned her escape from the verbal and physical abuse she endured on a daily basis.

Kathleen generously shares her story of hope, but it wasn't easy for her to achieve balance in her life. She made conscious choices to heal, using methods that enlightened and empowered her. She writes in a concise and chronological style, offering just enough information for the reader to absorb as she is able. (Women in crisis are often unable to concentrate.)

Kathleen hosts a blog-talk radio show that brings awareness to the social problem of domestic violence (and other problems) with a focus on solving these problems one empowered woman at a time.
