Book Description

A frog in a teapot, a lost necklace, and a sabotaged boat: incongruencies that lead an unlikely hero to investigate a chilling murder in Regency England.

Discarded by his betrothed with a parting sally that “being an earl does not excuse being a bore,” Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, joins his brother on a relaxing cruise, hoping to forget. But a storm capsizes their boat, and despite Hugh’s desperate efforts, he can’t save his brother’s life. Then, when the wreckage reveals evidence of sabotage, he realizes he was never meant to return to dock. Someone intending to murder the earl killed his younger brother, instead. Angered and grieving, Hugh travels to London to enlist the aid of the Second Sons Inquiry Agency in finding his brother’s murderer.

Helen Archer attended the Earl of Monnow’s ball in expectation of joining the celebration for his betrothal, but the event seems destined for disaster. She arrives late, the earl makes no announcement, and Helen manages to lose the fabled (but cursed) Peckham necklace her sister reluctantly loaned to her. Unwilling to admit her carelessness to her sister, Helen rashly decides to return to the earl’s estate and retrieve it in secret.

When his aunt threatens to send him to the Earl of Monnow, his purportedly cruel uncle, Edward Leigh-Brown decides he’s had enough of female interference. He’s going to join the navy and follow in Lord Nelson’s footsteps to become a military hero. But finding his way to London is a lot harder for a young boy than it seems, and he’s soon lost. When he bumps into Miss Helen Archer at an inn, he’s more than happy to accept a ride in her carriage, even if she seems determined to escort him to an inquiry agency to hire someone to locate the family he doesn’t want located.

When the three meet in London at Second Sons, Helen impulsively decides to accompany Hugh to the earl’s home. They will be disguised as servants and free to pursue their secret goals. Hugh hopes to uncover a killer, Helen hopes to find her necklace, and Edward just hopes he can find the opportunity to escape again.

But they are soon engulfed in an adventure none of them anticipated, and Hugh must hurry to identify who wants him dead before their deception ends in the death of another innocent.

Witty dialog, endearing characters and unforeseen circumstances add up to a Regency adventure like none other!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely fun June 11, 2012

I read this book in a few sittings. It was implausible and amusing. Her characters were likable and I enjoyed all of their adventures. I really liked the fact that they did not fall into bed shortly after having met. Attractions were allowed to develop throughout the plot. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Regency romantic/mystery January 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It was pretty much what I expected it to be and I shall read other Second Sons mysteries. I enjoyed the heroine in this story. Sometimes they are a bit impulsive and irritate the heck out of me but not this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read It In One Sitting February 19, 2013

The main characters were very lovable the secondary ones were almost tolerable. I enjoyed the charade throughout the story and was a bit saddened that there was loss but was glad it had a HEA . I appologize but I didn't pay attention to whether facts were accurate or spelling and grammer was correct....thats how invested I was in the story. So happy to have been able to read it free. I will look for other works by this author. Happy Reading and Enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun story March 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this book. It was lighthearted and, while rather predictable (I figured out who did it halfway through), it was a fun story with likable characters. I enjoy regency romances, but too many these days go completely overboard with the graphic bedroom scenes, so it was refreshing that this book was a nice innocent exception. While I enjoyed the story, unfortunately there were some inconsistencies in the plot. Characters would be told a piece of information in one chapter, and then several chapters later they would be told the same information again as if for the first time. This happened more than once, and at one point I was sure that I must have confused two characters. Nope, it was only that single character being told the same thing twice and both times acting as if it was completely new information (I scrolled all the way back to check). There were only a few additional typos/grammatical errors throughout, so the editing was decent. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light but entertaining regency story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light and likable June 5, 2013
By CHB74
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was another light, likable and entertaining book from Amy Corwin. I read a ridiculous number of both romances and mysteries, so it's always a treat (and sadly rare!) to find a book that combines the two with some success. The mystery isn't especially clever or intricately plotted, but it works as a fun diversion. The characters are likable and root-worthy (certainly not a given in this genre!), albeit not especially layered or compelling. And while I read romances that range from steamy to G-rated, it's an awfully refreshing change these days to come across one that doesn't include painfully explicit, graphic, can't-tell-one-from-the-other sex scenes. The H and h in Escaping Notice are focused on things other than sex, and that suited this reader just fine.

I didn't like this one quite as much as The Vital Principle, which was one of the more supremely enjoyable low-cost books that my Kindle and I devoured that year. I did, however, like this a lot more than A Rose Before Dying, which just didn't come together for me. For me, there's a certain depth, substance and undefinable magic missing from Amy Corwin's books that keeps them from being true favorites or even especially memorable, but that's more of a subjective feeling than an objective criticism. They're certainly entertaining, enjoyable and refreshingly angst-free reads that are worth the reasonable price!

3.0 out of 5 stars Suspend Belief June 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One has to suspend belief with this story. Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, survives a ship wreck which he finds to be the result of sabotage. He decides to return to his home disguised as a servant to investigate in secret. I find it hard to believe that neither his aunt nor any of the long time servants will recognize Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, simply because he has grown a beard.

Helen Archer had lost the famous Peckham necklace at a ball at the Monnow estate. Rather than simply ask if it has been found she too returns disguised as a servant to see if she can find it herself. I suppose she doesn't realize that servants would have cleaned up and put things away after the ball and if the necklace were there someone would already have found it.

Aside from that, it is a light-hearted read with interesting looks into the different aspects of Regency life. One can have empathy for the protagonists and also Ned, the earl's nephew who has fled the home of his harsh aunts to run away to sea and also ends up as a servant in the earl's home. Aside from the mystery of who sabotaged the earl's boat, one is also wondering about how the protagonists are going to explain their actions when they reveal themselves as to who they really are. It can be a fun read with good dialogue and descriptions if one brushes aside the unrealistic plot contrivances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully different May 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this clean historical. I loved the way the author built the story slowly. Her main characters are wonderful. The H is huge and supposedly deadly dull and the h describes herself as 'shatter-brained'. Everything was so quirky and I had a few laugh out loud moments. The kid was also an interesting character and added to the story. It seems that this book may be part of a series but it isn't necessary to have read any of the other books.
