A Fine Tribute to the 1st Fighter Group!, March 2, 2006
This review is from: An Escort of P-38s: The 1st Fighter Group in WW II (Hardcover)
AN ESCORT OF P-38s is clearly a labor of love and one fine history of the U. S. Air Force's oldest fighter group in action in World War II. Until something better comes along, this book should be considered the definitive history of the 1st FG.
Author John Mullins served with the 1st FG in Italy. His firsthand knowledge of group operations combined with dozens of first-person narratives from other group pilots and personnel make for a well-written, comprehensive history. Just about every page has narratives from group personnel along with many black and white photos of aircrew, aircraft and opponents. The book also includes two pages of nicely done color profiles by John Valo.
The 1st FG flew many memorable missions over North Africa and southern Europe in their P-38s, winning two DUCs. By war's end they had downed 440 enemy aircraft while suffering the loss of over 200 pilots KIA, MIA or POW. The Group included a number of memorable characters like Jack Ilfrey, Tom Maloney and Herb Hatch and their exploits live again in John Mullins' wonderful, evocative book.
Highly recommended!
