Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-British actress Joanna Lumley has a ball reading these two absurd short stories created by the late Roald Dahl. Lumley especially shines on Esio Trot, a wacky love story about lonely Mr. Hoppy's infatuation with his neighbor, Mrs. Silver. Unfortunately for Mr. Hoppy, the object of his affection loves her pet turtle Alfie. Winning her heart involves a bogus poem designed to make the runt Alfie grow, and Lumley recites this humorous backwards poem with finesse. She also does a fine job creating a woeful voice for the lovestruck Hoppy and a giddy one for Mrs. Silver. The jazzy music playing at the beginning and end of the story adds to its lighthearted tone. Lumley also reads The Minpins with energy and surprising heart. This tale captures the adventures of Little Billy whose mother forbids him to enter the deep dark woods. Of course Billy disobeys his mom, ignoring her warnings that this "Forest of Sin" is filled with horrible creatures like the Red-Hot Smoke-Belching Gruncher. Lumley ably conveys the suspense and scariness of Little Billy's journey into the woods, reading some lines in a hushed whisper and others in a frantic but always clear manner. She does a good job of bringing the tiny titular characters to life as well. Young listeners will enjoy hearing these tales read by such a talented, enthusiastic performer. A first-rate production.
