Step 1. Write down ^FNC30. That is a zero, and don't forget the ^. Don't worry about the start char, fnc3 char, or identifier the manual asks for, just use ^FNC30.
Step 2. Find your 3 digit option number. You will find those on pages 32-40 of the manual. If you can't figure out which option code you need, find a pre-supplied barcode in the manual that does something similar to what you need to do. Your option code will be digits 2, 3, and 4 of that barcode. Write that down after the ^FNC30.
Step 3. Find the rest of the numbers. If your option number starts with a 0 or 1, look up that option in the manual and select the value you want that option to be, somewhere between the min or or max listed. Write that down after your option number. Go to step 4.
If your option number starts with a 2, you have more work to do. Look up your option in the manual, and figure out the correct numbers for each item. For example, with option number 202, you need a 2 digit string, then a 1 digit string type, a 2 digit active for type, a 1 digit scan direction, and then up to 30 characters you want to use. If you are confused about what value to use for each digit, look at a premade barcode with the same option number and compare it to the instructions.Read more ›
Tweak: The beep was too loud for my quiet working environment (I don't have to hear it over loud background noise) so I covered the small speaker holes with a couple layers black electrical tape. It blends in nicely with the black finish and brings the volume of the beeps to a very comfortable range.
Con: It might have been possible to lower the volume of the beep by the settings but the 61 page manual was not clear. Instructions seem to be aimed at a person familiar with decoder/scanners and terms are not explained. I could not get it to allow me to change settings. I could enter the setup mode, but no keys had effect after that. I had to wait for the scanner to time out from the setup mode to free myself from it. But for my purposes I haven't needed to change anything in the setup anyway.
I'm pleased with this scanner for price, portability, accuracy, no installation needed, and appearance. I may purchase a second to have at home.
Having said that, all of what I said above really only applies to our using it on a Windows XP box. My wife was unable to get it to work on her Windows 7 machine. It would seem to scan, complete with beep (more on the beep in a moment), but no text would be input as a result of the scan. Disappointing, but we have a number of computing options in the house, so not that critical.
Now, about the beep. It is freaking LOUD. Since my wife and I are on alternate schedules (she's a morning person, while I work evenings), I really don't want to be making lots of loud beeping noises while scanning books. There may be a way software- or firmware-wise to lower the beep volume, but I'm not seeing a way to adjust beep volume in the manual. When I have the scanner plugged in and I'm booting up my machine, I have to muffle the beep by pressing the heel of my thumb against the grille in the case where the speaker is located. Some tape and foam might fix the solution for the duration, but so far that hasn't really proven necessary. Plus, that sounds an awful lot like work.
The main reason for deducting a star would be its failure to work with Winderz 7. The beep is more annoying for me than my wife... which kinda makes my gripes about the beep seem a bit pointless. So, no star deduction for the beep.
