Culture of Fear Introduction

Biography

Spend a day with Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza and you might hear them make reference to David Cope, the university professor who studies music and artificial intelligence, or mention Garza’s travels to Sudan and Nepal, or explain why The Clash’s London Calling may just be the best-produced album in rock history. So it’s not surprising that Hilton and Garza’s thoughtful… Read more in Amazon's Thievery Corporation Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Was expecting a bit more, but worth the money, January 10, 2007

ESL is known for putting out albums and compilations that are of consistently high quality. Most of them are not "masterpieces," even if you do see the 5 star rating on many of them. But most of them are quite enjoyable and consistently good to very good, with a truly great one popping up every now and then (such as Chris Joss YOU'VE BEEN SPIKED and Ursula 1000's ALL SYSTEMS ARE A GO-GO).

So here we are: the 100th release. WOW! I forgot that this indie label really cranks out the goods. So being an ESL fan, after receiving some gift cards for Christmas (love 'em!), I had to pick this one up. The blurb on the CD essentially said that this is the beginning of a new era rather a retrospective, I was prepped for something fresh.

I didn't get that. It sounds like the same ol' ESL vibe to me, mostly from Thievery Corporation's storehouse of musical ideas and arrangements. A good thing, this. But for the most part this isn't anything that you haven't heard from the label before.

Shame on ESL for telling us this is the beginning of something new, lol. But if you want that aural fix of the ESL sound you have come to know and love, grab this one. It's worth your dough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now This is What I'm Talking About...and You Will To, May 18, 2007
This review is from: Esl Remixed: 100th Release of Esl Music (Audio CD)
Holy Moly what an incredible CD this is as it is a musical journey which is both exihilerating and magical. The compilation is a collection of releases of new versions of songs previously released by some of the roster of incredible ESL artists.

Every track is truly top shelf as this label produces some of the most irresistable, imaginative, beautiful, and just great music recorded over the past ten years or so. ESL is related to the great artist Thievery Corporation (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) and they are the ones behind hip, cool and original releases from Thunderball, Ursula 1000 and Chris Joss just to name a few.

In fact Chris mixes a new version of "Chick-a-Boom" by Joe Bataan which is sure to be an audio assualt which will propel all dancers off their feet and out on the dance floor.

"A Gentle Dissolve", which is a re-working of a TC song from "The Cosmic Game" has an organ sound which is unusual and moving and is a terrific soundscape (Middle Eastern Adventure Soundtrack) song as is the re-worked "Road to Benares" by Thunderball which is the Bombay Orchestra Mix.

The re-works of "Exploration" (The great Karminsky Experience"), "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" and "Wrong Alley" are other standouts.

Actually from start to finish this CD is a musical travelogue of soundscapes, lush tones and incredible break beats which is truly superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy, November 21, 2007
This review is from: Esl Remixed: 100th Release of Esl Music (Audio CD)
Makes me want to dance like a Latin, take up drinking martinis, and carpet my bedroom in orange shag. I like this cd more each time I listen to it- I am cooler than James Bond when this cd is on.
