Those living lives of quiet desperation who sense that there is some more rewarding way to live one's life will find this book to be a practical manual on how to free oneself from that dis-ease and all other negative states that obscure one's true nature. If you've ever read Krishnamurti and, while inrtrigued, couldn't glean a practical way to realize his teachings will be delighted with Vernon Howard. He has distilled the very best teachings from the great spiritual teachers and formed practical exercises that lead toward enlightenment and and end to the misery we all put ourselves through. I like this work by Howard better than the others I've read as it places more emphasis on the most important technique of self-awakening--detached self-observation. "Know thyself" has long been a spiritual maxim, and this technique will help you accomplish that goal, and so much more. Just do it! Good luck with your fascinating and liberating quest for awakening to a deep, lasting happiness.

I'm glad I've stumbled onto Mr. Vernon Howard's materials. It has helped me so much that I cant even explain it. Every paragraph that I've read, I felt a shock going through my body because the truth was letting me know. I cant believe that I'm the second person reviewing this book. anyone intersted in his books or not yet sure should check out anewlife.org, its vernon howards homepage. Listen to the sound library and I'm sure you'll purchase all his works.

VERNON HOWARD BYPASSES ALL OF THE FLOWERY LINGO USED BY TODAY'S AUTHORS AND CHALLENGES YOU TO LOOK INWARD IN A STYLE THAT WILL COMPLETELY ALTER THE WAY YOU SEE YOUR EXISTENCE. VERNON HOWARD'S TEACHINGS ARE BRILLIANT BECAUSE THEY BRING TRUTH TO THE FOREFRONT AT ALL TIMES. IF YOU ARE TIRED OF LIVING IN THE KINDERGARTEN OF LIFE, STUDY VERNON HOWARD. THE TRUTH IS ALL WE NEED, AND I BELIEVE THAT VERNON HOWARD IS ONE OF THE FEW THAT ACTUALLY ATTAINED THIS HIGHER LEVEL OF LIVING. VERNON HOWARD IS ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO REALLY LIVED. The writing style for this book is very strange. With each paragraph being a different thought roughly put together in chapters. If it would have been written as a book of proverbs I would have given it 5 stars.*****

With that said these are the most straight forward and clear wisdom sayings I have ever read.

There is a simple test for determining whether or not we are thinking with self benefit. If either an enemy or a friend appears to be exterior to us,we must reverse our mind. The enemy or friend is always within, though the mind projects them outward,thus deceiving us.

Nothing disturbs the man that controls his own mind.

Where ever you go, you meet yourself.

Your internal state is your world.

A problem is solved by seeing there is no problem outside yourself.

The contented man is rich.

Intelligent inaction is the highest form of action.

Peace exists when you have nothing to prove.....when you have no self to prove.

When demanding something from another person,you lose command of yourself.

Our freedom can be determined by the number of things we can walk away from.

If you want 200 pages of these buy the book.

What can I say? I sit here to write a review and I find that words are inadequate to express the truths contained within this book.(as well as all of his other books) I completely agree with the reviewers below. I have read so, so many books in my lifetime and vernon howard simply towers above the rest. His insight, understanding and utter authority is unparalleled by any other. I find his teachings to be absolutely inspiring, straightforward and "non-new-agey".

There are not enough stars to rate this book as high as it needs to be. This is the 2nd Vernon Howard book I've read and I can't wait to get into the next one. The Mystic Path To Cosmic Power is a good intro if you haven't read it yet. This one is not a rehashing of ideas from that book. Some of the same truths are presented, but definately in a new way that stretches the ideas further.

The titles of these books seem strange on the surface, but just get into the book and be open to what is being said and you'll gain a higher perspective. The titles might lead you to think this is "New Age" stuff, but it is really a genuine philosphy on how to live a purposeful life.

I've been searching for this insight for years, digging through other books on philosophy, religion, and self help. Many times having to wade through an entire chapter to get what is presented on just one paragraph of this book. I usually jot down ideas in the back of a book, but there are too many to note per page in this one.

I'm writting this review so others can find the answers I have been searching for most of my life. If one cannot accept the concepts in these books, the very reason one cannot accept them is actually in the books, and what these books are all about.

You are not who you think you are, and you do not need what you think you do. Almost all of our "problems" are caused by self-division. These are the basic tenants of this book (as well as "The Power of Your Supermind", another brilliant Howard work). Some people will go through life not ever knowing this or caring, others may "see" the truths presented here but be unwilling to face or accept them. We are so engrained in our tortured ways of thinking and self-punishment it is extremely difficult to "switch gears", let alone see the basic problem. Vernon Howard provides the key to change all that.

Make no mistake, this is not another "New Age" self-help book filled with flowery ideas and feel-good mumbo-jumbo. Most of us go through life searching for "happiness"...money, sex, success, power, drugs, fame, even trying to do "good". All attempts leave us still feeling empty. Why? This book will tell you why - when I read it I felt like I had been shot with a diamond. Yes, there are many Eastern and Western concepts presented here that may not be "new"...but Howard frames them in such a crystalline way they "seem" new. Understandable. Do-able.

Being a Christian, I was at times almost embarrassed at how much more I was "getting out" of this book than I ever have the Bible. And while I haven't changed my religious beliefs, the truth is the truth - the source is irrelevant.

As Mr. Howard likes to say...we are walking through this life asleep. Read this book, and become awake. A life-changing work.

Here we have a man who easily ranks with the wisest minds in the history of the human race. Socrates, Plato, Laotzu, Buddha, Emerson, etc. This, I assure you, is no exaggeration whatsoever. Although I do not agree with every single thing written in this book, the essential message makes up the bulk of the book which I do agree with: There are higher levels of conciousness within us waiting to be discovered.

I've read at least four books by Vernon Howard and this one was most helpful to me in learning what I had to do at that point in my life to begin making the necessary changes to become the person I always knew I could be. I recommend it to anyone who is nearing the point of saying, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

This book doesn't advocate anger or protest; rather, honest self-examination--which is all that the true seeker really needs to break through.

Can't put this book down. It is filled with truths that open the mind.
