This text provides an introduction to the history and civilization of Spain. All important cultural and historical information from previous editions has been retained in this new edition, and new information about modern-day political organization and culture has been added. With added emphasis on the regional divisions of Spain and improved treatment of women, this text is an excellent vehicle for introducing intermediate or advanced students to Spanish civilization and culture.

About the Author

Michael Ugarte is a professor of Spanish at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is the author of numerous studies on the modern literature of Spain, including a book on the novels of Juan Gotisolo, Trilogy of Treason. As a Guggenheim fellow, he completed a book on Spanish Civil War exile literature, Shifting Ground, and, more recently, Madrid 1900. His father, Francisco Ugarte, original author of España y su civilización, found a new home in New Hampshire after the turmoil and hardship resulting from the Spanish Civil War.

Kathleen McNerney is an ecclectic scholar whose works include studies of writers from various times and places. She is the author of books on the fifteenth-century poet Ausias March and the novelist Joanot Martorell as well as works on contemporary Catalan women writers. She has also written about Spanish, French, and Latin American authors - both classic and current. McNerney is from New Mexico and teaches literature, humanities, and women's studies at West Virginia University. In 1990, she was awarded the Catalonia Prize for diffusion of Catalan culture, and in 1995 she was designated Benedum Distinguished Scholar by her institution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Spanish History, July 25, 2008

This review is from: Espana y su civilizacion (Paperback)
I got this book to A. practice my Spanish and B. learn a bit about Spanish history, and I definitely got both (and then some) with this text. It's definitely meant for students - at the end of sections there are comprehension and discussion questions and a list of sources to check out. I'd say it's for the intermediate/advanced student, someone who has studied Spanish for at least a few years.

In terms of content, this book is pretty much an overview of the history, and doesn't get into TOO much detail, which is ideal if you haven't studied Spanish history/cultural at all/very little. The book is divided into 5 units, dedicated to I. la prehistoria hasta la edad media, II. siglo de oro, III. siglo de luces y reformas (siglos 18 y 19), IV. Siglo XX, V. presente y futuro (book published in 1998 so it's un poco pasado ahora!) There's a particular focus on the arts - literature, art, music, which I love because it'll make a nice reference book for most any Spanish literature class.

I also have to say that I love the style too - it's clear and concise and pretty easy to understand, but it's not really dumbed down either. Love it! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Overly simplified, but good for a lower level class, September 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm using this book in a 300 level college course right now, but I feel like it is a little simplified for that. It boils history down to tiny little paragraphs with little detail. However, if you want something simple for an intermediate level class, this is a very good one. The chronologies at the beginning of each section are especially helpful in keeping dates in order.

This book presents the story of Spain in a simple way. Easy to read and comprehend for those that might not like history too much.
