O Espirito singer Teresa Salgueiro slides from behind the eclipse of her high-toned, girlish voice into the light of the deeper, emotive singing heard throughout
O Paraíso--a vocal style that tore through the heart with sublime aching.
O Espirito begins with Salgueiro floating in higher, thinner registers before dipping down into the full range of melancholy colors in the album's latter half. Still the collection is haunting and darkly beautiful: the material gently lulls the listener and the fine guitar work leads hearts to a quiet, centered place. Salgueiro's at her best with formed melodies, and all three movements of "Três Ilusôes" ("Three Illusions") along with the urgent "O Pastor" boast her talent well in this light.
O Espirito may not be the highest peak in Madredeus's mountain range of albums, but it certainly is one of the best, drawing one into the exotic melancholy of Portugal while conjuring "the spirit of peace."
