Mushroom patch underway,

I bought the mushroom kit as my husband and I enjoy mushrooms, wanted to save some money, and we like the idea of growing our own food. I therefore split the spawn between the both of us (he lives in another state temporarily) and we are now comparing its growth. Since we were splitting it, we weren't going to need a 5 gallon bucket. Also, to maximize mushroom production I figured more surface area, the better. So we bought 4 clear storage containers. We made 1 coffee ground box and 1 newspaper/cardboard box each. We sprinkle/mist water that has been boiled to get rid of the chlorine in our tap water. However, when constructing the boxes and watering, we found the instructions to be vague. We had a lot of questions such as: how much water to mist, how deep should the layers be, etc. My husband and I are engineers so I think we expected some more numerical guidelines. So we had trouble trying to determine how to scale down the original instructions to our own boxes.
But we made it work. Also, I don't like the idea that this kit isn't sustaining, meaning I can't grow mushrooms forever off of it. Furthermore, know beforehand that if you intend to do the coffee ground method, you need a lot of grounds. We worked on this over a weekend and had to call/visit 3 coffeeshops to acquire grounds pretty fast. 1.5 weeks: Mine are growing faster than his and I have mycellium development over the entire coffee ground box, and vertical shoot growth in the newspaper one. He wasn't boiling his water beforehand and now does. Mine are also in a more opaque humidity tent, but that's another experiment in itself. So, I will continue to update this and try to upload pictures. So far so good after some confusion in the beginning.

I've eaten the oyster mushrooms that I've grown out of the 2 buckets and one bag. I'm guessing it's about 2 or 3 months now and I've eaten probably about 1 or 2 pounds of mushrooms. The oyster mushrooms taste just like the mushrooms you get from market. I live in a really dry and hot area and right now it's summer so the mushrooms always need a lid or saran wrap or a cover to keep the humidity in. Even with daily misting, if the humidity isn't maintained the mushrooms will "stall" and not grow more than 5-6 millimeter caps in dense bunches (looks sort of like a golf ball sized white truffle).

I mixed the product with unsterilized coffee grounds and followed the directions. Growing much mold. Perhaps if the grounds were sterilized the result would have been different.
