More About the Author

Professional writer since 1989. Author of the IN THE REALM OF THE GODS series and the SUZIE crime novels. But that's not all: screenplays, short stories, fantasy, mysteries, varied nonfiction, and even chick lit. Crazy, but highly reliable. Can fix about anything.

Also highly skilled at caregiving from long experience.

Most memorable event?
I'd say the most startling event of my life was the Greensburg Tornado in 2007. The house was ripped apart around me. I was buried in the wreckage, but strangely, the wreckage wasn't my enemy, but my friend. It kept my late mother, her two cats, and me alive by holding us fast against the tremendous screaming winds of the tornado. And then, silence. No sirens, no rescuers, just silence. I dug us out of the wreckage. Eventually, after a seemingly endless time in that silence, setting my poor demented mother in a salvaged chair and digging out the cats to set them in their carriers beside her, help arrived.

Otherwise, a fairly ordinary creative life, full of day jobs.

Original ideas. Great story, tech and tactics. Good milscifi. Growth of the protagonist's character was well done. Story is set in a bleak far future. Humans have transcended physical bodies. At least the fortunate few, the Gods. Anywhere but at the top is not a good place to be. Most of the characters in this book are good enough to have their own story even as brief as it is. One of the Gods too.

The use of tech and tactics was spot on. Didn't get lost in the details and still told me enough to enjoy. Remained believable and entertaining. I read a lot of scifi and milscifi and this was well done.

Per the authors afterword there are two more books written and they are much longer. This book is about novella in length at 160 pages. It read much longer than many of the 180-220pg books that seem to be a fad lately and that was a pleasant surprise. Only noticed one misspelled word feel/fell. Might even be a software error.

I will be getting the next two for sure. Well done.

I'm not someone who writes reviews but this novella deserves one. I'm not going to go into the story line as the kindle summary does it well enough. Just say that if you like David Weber, Robert Heinlein with a bit of James Clavell mixed in you will enjoy this story. I got it free via FreeBooksy. Now it's enticed me enough that I'm going to have to purchase the related novels (though as noted in my header this is indeed a totally stand alone work).

Great character development and storyline. A Sci-Fi where the 'Sci-Fi' is not the star but the characters are. Technology itself takes a back seat to the characters. You just want more . . .

While this book lacks the depth of a Stirling or Webber novel, it is a quick, satisfying read and quite enjoyable. Well worth your time.

Great book. Good introduction to the series Realm of the Gods. A lot of action in the book and moves quickly. While I like the book, I do prefer the other book in the series Causality more since it goes more in depth into the universe. Highly recommended.

A GREAT READ! R P Bird has potential as a science fiction writer. I have read a lot of books from this genre and absolutely loved the readability of the book. I especially like the concept of the Hana's ulterior motives with flavors of cyberpunk, military science, and a young hero with a flushed out background. In your commentary, you stated that your hope is to print the books rather than put them on the Kindle Store, which makes sense for a career writer. However, I would still love to purchase Causality and Contravallation if you make them available for kindle. I don't buy many physical books. Neither do many people. We are in the middle of the information age. As did many people, I found your book among the first 1000 free books listed on the Kindle Store. I hope to see more of your books in the future.

A VERY CAPTIVATING STORY, I TRULY ENJOYED IT! I FOUND MYSELF FALLING INTO THE AMAZING PERSONALITIES OF EACH CHARACTER AND HOLDING MY BREATH, TO SEE HOW THE WELL EXPRESSED PERSONALITIES AND CHALLENGES TURNED OUT! A VERY GOOD READ! WARMLY, Barbara Jack baabra1950@yahoo.com
