Christian Philosophy - the Definitive Answer,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: An Essay on Christian Philosophy (Paperback)
In this essay Jacques Maritain presents his key distinction between the nature of philosophy and the state of its existence as an answer to the question - how can Christian faith affect philosophy? In the first part, he raises the question and gives the two extremes (Rationalism and Blondel). Second, he introduces his distinction between nature and state of philosophy and begins to unfold the nature of philosophy. Thirdly, he gives his answer on how Christian faith affects the state of philosophy through both objective and subjective aids. Lastly, he gives a brief explanation of the relationship between theology and philosophy and gives his more contentious thoughts on moral philosophy. This also includes an appendix of notes where he replies further to Blondel concerning his position and expands his thoughts on moral philosophy. If you are interested in understanding what Christian Philosophy is then this is the book to read. John Paul II largely follows Maritain's lead here when discussing Christian Philosophy in Fides et Ratio. Definitely recommended.
