Format: Paperback
I picked up this collection for an essay or two on Plato, and received added pleasure by reading the work's introduction. Ackrill reads like a stable in the analytic diet: he's got a clear voice, a zeal for precise analysis, and the standard emphasis on the intersection of ancient thought with modern, persisting philosophical problems. The essays in this collection are a search for philosophical rigor within the two earliest titans. The introduction outlines the development of 'ancient philosophy' in Oxford 50s, and its more recent wake of influence.

The book has one limitation: its scope. I'm not sure why anyone but a library, a personal friend, or perhaps a student taking a course on Ackrill would buy this book. Are there courses on Ackrill? I'm sure they'd be great. That said, this volume otherwise does not answer the question, "why should I buy you?"
