A big fan of Emerson, I love the way he ties nature in to every important aspect of our lives. He paints a vivid and honest picture of life. Always thought provoking, his style may be a little bit wordy for some but the message is inspiring and timeless.

Many great jewels of literary phrases but they are mixed in with a multitude of lessor thoughts. This is more of a volume I would use to look for an opinion on a certain subject rather than read through cover to cover. However, I may give it second read at a later time.

Required reading for anyone interested in placing today's discussions of self reliance in a broader context. Wonderful writings, particularly the American Scholar.

How can you dislike Emerson? In any form his essays are excellent - as historical information and for the universal ideas contained within.

I haven't read much of this historic classic yet, but as I never read it in school, I was curious and most interested in his essay on Nature. It's blissful. He so hits it on the head. What a spiritual person he was! What a love and reverence he had for nature, or God, creation. Life. Trees and sky and clouds and everything in between. So lucky we are to have his thoughts forever in print.

This book describes America’s core: Self-reliance. The values in this work make us who we are as a culture. Entrepreneurs, like Jeff Bezos, founder Amazon.com is a living example of Emerson’s philosophy: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” My middle grade novel, CRIME TRAVELERS, coming soon to this website is infused with Emerson’s values.
