I live at the end of a long dirt road, and during mud season one simply needs a tool for getting the bulk of the mud off outside the house (the shoes come off when you can sit down in the warmth). Most boot scrapers are either extremely heavy or have a very large base so that they don't scootch out of the way when you rub against them. The problem with that arrangement is that they quickly build up a layer of fallen mud around them, and it is then a nuisance to move the whole mess aside and sweep away the fallen mud. In contrast, this scraper achieves its stability by having a holding ball that helps you will your balance while you are standing on one foot and scraping with the other one. You scrape the left sides of both feet with the scraper in one orientation, and then flip it around and scrape the right sides on both feet. If you have REALLY adhesive mud, you use the sharp edge of the boot silhouette to scrape out your instep. Then, you simply lift the scraper up with the ball and you can sweep the scrapings effortlessly off the porch. Note that the holding ball is 35 inches high, not the 18 that was given in the description when I purchased it. Furthermore, the width (18 inches) is larger than the 12 inches specified. The bristles on the brushes are a bit flimsy, but should be very easy to replace when they wear out. This is the only scraper I found that did a good job clearing both sides of each shoe AND scraping as well as brushing while being easy to clean up the porch. And not insufferably cute.

This is an amazing boot scraper and brush. The upright pole is nice for something to hold onto so you don't slip if you're standing on an icy spot with the other shoe. The brushes are well mounted and look like they'll be easy to replace from home improvement stores. The metal boot part is so thick I can't see it ever needing replaced. It seems heavily painted/powder coated, so aside from keeping the paint up, I don't think it will rust. I'll update this when rust starts to appear (For reference bought in Dec 2013, will live outside a barn and outside the house door in Colorado).

The one downside they do have is no easy way to permanently mount them to something. This is easily fixed with drilling a hold through the metal, painting it, then staking it to the dirt (or screwing it to wood decking)
