5.0 out of 5 stars Ueshiba Essence and his spiritual writings!
For those martial artists who admire Morihei Ueshiba and fans of the editor/writer John Stevens. I appreciated the interesting portfolio of ancient aikido art, photos of the founder of AIKIDO and his "dynamic quality," DOKA. I very much enjoyed Ueshiba's japanese poetry and the valuable interpretations of his exotic poems. One may imagine learning some new...

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for people who are obsessed with Aikido
I train Jujitsu and Aikido on daily basis and there was absolutely nothing in this book in my opinion that would make me a better warrior or martial artist. Stop writting books just to sell them. Write them so that people can really learn something and than incorporate that in to their life. I found THE ART OF PEACE an inspiring reading but these was just gibberish and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ueshiba Essence and his spiritual writings!, June 13, 2001
For those martial artists who admire Morihei Ueshiba and fans of the editor/writer John Stevens. I appreciated the interesting portfolio of ancient aikido art, photos of the founder of AIKIDO and his "dynamic quality," DOKA. I very much enjoyed Ueshiba's japanese poetry and the valuable interpretations of his exotic poems. One may imagine learning some new insights into the fascinating art of aikido and spiritual poems of Ueshiba. World Class Aikido book! Mostly about the ESSENCE without the

aikido instruction type of book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essence of Aikido: Spiritual Teachings of Morihei Ueshiba, November 3, 2006
If you are looking for a book on technique this isn't it, but a good overview of Ueshiba's philosophy of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a classic, December 5, 2005

This review is from: The Essence of Aikido: Spiritual Teachings of Morihei Ueshiba (Hardcover)
This book is a must have. The material on the lesser known spiritual origins of Aikido is something that few books discuss, on a subject that few aikidoka fully understand. If you don't have this book, you don't have an Aikido library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A serious study of Aikido with scholarly precision., January 23, 1998
By
This review is from: The Essence of Aikido: Spiritual Teachings of Morihei Ueshiba (Hardcover)
A venture into the mysterious depth of Aikido. A must for all serious scholars interested in the study of O-Sensei's work and art. Unsuitable for half-hearted novices as most contents require critical study.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Aikido, January 30, 2011
`The Essence Of Aikido' is a book of Morihei Ueshibas teachings as translated by John Stevens. It is the companion book to `Budo' also by Morihei Ueshiba but this one has more doka (songs of the path) and calligraphy, as well as numerous photos of O Sensei. Part 1 looks at Aikido cosmology, part 2 contains the doka in kanji, roma-ji and English, part 3 has calligraphy, part 4 looks at misogi purification and part 5 has extensive photography of O Sensei practising various techniques. Some of the philosophy is hard to grasp from an initial reading and this is good to come back to as you progress in your understanding and Aikido training. The information enclosed isn't essential for the physical aspect of Aikido training, but makes for an all round understanding of the martial art and adds to your overall training and development. This is probably best come to after you have been training for a while and wish to develop Aikido ideas further. This is an excellent source of photography of O Sensei and would make up the purchase price for this aspect of the book alone. A worthy addition to any Aikido bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect step on the way to learn what Aikido really is about, March 27, 2010

One of my Senseis reminds us from time to time: "Noone will realize his inner self practicing locks and trows".
Well, this book gives a beautiful introduction to the spiritual practice of Aikido.

The first part explains Kototama, the sacred sounds of creation.
In another part we learn about Misogi, the inside and outside purification to clear the senses & the mind to give us access to the reality of things.
Then Stevens presents caligraphic works and poetic instruccions of O-Sensei, always with (printed) japanese Kanji, traduccion and explanation.

Especially this part has qualities I found only with the great translation (and interpretation!) work done by Richard Wilhelm on the I-Ching and Tao Te King.

Obviously there are 2 things to keep in mind when buying this book:

1st, about half the pictures in the book are already in the book "Budo" by Morihei Oeshiba (here compared with later pictures of the same tecniques)
2nd it is in the end, though containing profound teachings, just an introduction, one may want to have all other books by Stevens like "Training with master" and even better the direct transcriptions of O-Senseis teachings "Takemusu Aiki" (only Japanese and French) and whatever other source to study the deep spiritual way of the Aiki-O-Kami.
