5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional tale of the complex landscape beyond the veil

3.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read...
The best thing about this story is that I came to care about the main character and it is easy to empathize with her. Using her voice to "speak" to the "writer" or her story was a little cheesy - it did not seem to work well (for me at least). Overall, an interesting read...worthwhile.

Essence: This Child Ghost Wants To Tell You Her Story is an engaging original novel featuring a most unusual protagonist - a child ghost Luzette, only eleven years old during the Civil War era when a stray bullet claimed her life. After her death she witnesses changes in the house, people coming and going, the world about her evolving and the regrets of other spirits. A poignant, emotional tale of the complex landscape beyond the veil, Essence is a novel that demands the reader's attention to the very last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a worthwhile read., September 28, 2006

I ordered this book in August. Finished it in two days, I couldn't put it down. Luzette is amazing, her story is one of fear, love, loneliness, fear, courage and hope. I wish sometimes that I would have an encounter like the ones described within. Luzette is now one of my all time favorite characters, and this is without a doubt my favorite book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essence, September 19, 2006
Essence is a fascinating story about the ghost of a little girl that haunts a house for centuries. The story takes the reader through many time periods, and provides beautiful examples of human emotion and desire through the introduction of many well developed characters. I could not put this book down, it was extremely entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical boo..., July 3, 2006

I am always open-minded when it comes to ghosts and this story had a definite different spin. I actually looked at the web site prior to reading the book, so I was delighted that the story could be true. The history and lives of the people made it interesting and a good read. I think some of the stories of the families could be novels themselves. I would have enjoyed the book better if it had allowed me to bond with some of the other characters. Worth reading. I appreciate the author's patience and hope of publication, however his editor left a lot to be desired (misspelled words, missing words, etc. causing distraction from the flow of words).

I loved this book and I am an avid reader of ghosts, hauntings, and the macabre. It is most unusual and delightful and I recommend it highly. I was apprehensive at purchasing it because it is classified as a novel, however, there is a website [...] that shows it could be true.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific read!, November 7, 2005
picked this book up thinking it would be a good scare--but it was just the opposite! dispells some fear of the spirit world. there was one or two creepy parts, but they were interesting takes on negative spirits. a week later and i am still considering the ideas presented in this book. definitely buy it.

This book was very compeling. The story being told from the point of view of the ghost makes for rethinking of hauntings.
I liked it... and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A spirit named Luzette, March 15, 2005
Three in the morning and a writer wakes to find himself sitting in front of his computer, typing. The story that unfolds before him is that of the little girl who has been haunting his dreams for several months. She died over one hundred forty years ago.

This child ghost want to tell her story.

Essence is just what it says, a ghost story told from the ghosts point of view. This gave a really interesting perspective to the story.

There is her quest to be free of the house. Will she ever be reunited with her mother? The effect that she has on the people who live there, and their effect on her.

This history of historic Savannah, the detail, was fantastic. Another thing I really liked about this book was her interaction with other spirits in the area.
