Product Description

Preeminent jazz composer/bassist William Parker
has been working with large ensembles from
the very beginning of his career as leader in the
mid 70s. His Essence of Ellington project is the
latest captivating manifestation of his orchestral
concepts, following the extraordinary Inside Songs
of Curtis Mayfield project, presented on record
with the acclaimed 2010 release I Plan To Stay A
Believer (AUM 62).
This project interprets selections from the vast
Duke Ellington songbook and presents new original
compositions inspired by the essence of Ellington.
The worldwide debut took place in Milan this past
February; that performance and recording thereof
turned out so tremendously that William and
AUM decided it needed to be released as soon as
possible. That concert, with more than two hours
of transformative exuberance and tenderness, is
presented here in its entirety. Highlights include
In a Sentimental Mood, presented in duet
by Dave Burrell & Darius Jones, updating the
Ellington & Coltrane classic recording. Caravan
is introduced with an extended alto solo by Rob
Brown; when the full orchestra hits it s immediately
evident that this tune has not been performed
better than this, ever. And, of course, each of
Parker s original compositions and performances
thereof (there are four of them here).

This isn't a "tribute" album to Ellington's music-at least not in the traditional sense. Neither is this any kind of duplication of Ellington's big band sound. This is dangerous music-at times it comes roaring and stomping and ends in your face. This is William Parker's idea of the "spirit" of the Ellington sound-updated to both the way he hears it, and arranged for the present. This concert, from 2012 in Italy, has fine sound-open, and clean. There's an 8 page fold-out booklet which has some information on the music and the musicians. The discs are slipped-bare-inside rough cardboard pockets-so beware of scratches. Some of these compositions are worth 4 "stars", and some closer to 3 "stars"-to each his own. You'll understand when you hear this set.

The band consists of Parker-bass/arrangements, Roy Campbell-trumpet/flugelhorn, Matt Lavelle-soprano/tenor sax, Rob Brown and Darius Jones-alto sax, Sabir Mateen-clarinet/tenor sax (a personal favorite), Kidd Jones-tenor sax (another favorite), Dave Sewelson-baritone sax, Steve Swell and Willie Applewhite-trombone, Dave Burrell-piano, Hamid Drake-drums, and Ernie Odoom-voice (an acquired taste). Parker fans will notice a few names from his previous albums-and it's all the better for the music.

This set is Parker's attempt to tap into the "essence", the "spirit" of Ellington's big band sound. Besides playing some well known Ellington tunes, he's also incorporated a few originals into the mix. Some will probably call this blasphemy, or "noise", or at best-undisciplined playing. I understand that. But if you really listen you'll begin to hear what Parker is trying to do. This is Ellington's music updated to the very present, as Parker hears it.
