Great reference!,

I'm not sure why Amazon lists it as published in 1997, but FYI - the one I have is the 8th Edition, published in 2002 so there is a very current and up to date version available. Is it comprehensive? Well, with 3,232 pages and more than 142,000 entries - it's called the Deluxe American Edition. There is a pocket-size available, but this is NOT it! This is for the serious student of Korean. It's easy to read and it's got a lot of examples which help with context and sentence structure. It's really a terrific resource. When you're working from the other side of the language, there's a companion volume that helps you go from Korean to English. If you're really working in/learning the language, it's definitely worth it.

This is simply the best Korean dictionary for serious students and professionals. This leather covered dictionary is the most comprehensive and accurate with many example sentences. I owe a 2002 American edition with the companion volume Essence English-Korean Dictionary. I can find evern latest computer terminology and abbreviations. It also has practical and useful apnedices. It is worth of the price.

Very nice!,

I've only used this dictionary a little bit so far, but I'm quite pleased with it. I especially like the "phone book" feature (meaning the pages are prepared for "thumbing" to the appropriate starting letter). It also lists several meanings for each Korean word (I'm not certain it lists them all, but it seems likely).
A drawback for non-Korean speakers is that the Korean is only spelled in Hangul, not phonetically, but for my purposes of looking up individual words from written documents and figuring out what they mean, it's less important. For a later edition I would suggest that phonetics for the Korean words be included. it also is a big book - you won't want to tote this thing around any more than you have to. For desk-based work it's fine, and the binding allows the dictionary to stay open without you having to force it down. It comes in a cardboard "box" which allows the book to sit in a bookshelf (which otherwise it couldn't, as the binding and cover is pretty soft and the weight would cause it to flop down).

See my review under Essence English-Korean Dictionary. This volume is just as excellent when you're approaching the language from the other side.

This is probably the most comprehensive Korean-English dictionary available in the U.S. The sister English-Korean dictionary seems to be in 11th edition, but this one is only in 4th edition. It's about ten years old, but still seems up-to-date on technical words used in computer and financial industries. I like the fact that Chinese characters are shown next to all Korean entries. I can see the Chinese-root, which will help me learn those characters, and help clear-up meanings of homonyms. I can read phonetic Hangul, so the lack of romanized alphabet is not a problem for me. I like it very much, but I ended up buying the iPad App for the abridged Korean-English-Korean dictionary by the same company. Of course, I would not have bought the app without first having bought the leather-bound version and seeing the quality of the content. I use the iPad app a lot more, because it is more portable and it covers translations in both directions. I think if I bought the iPad app first, I would not have bought the leather-bound book, since the app meet almost all of my needs, it is cheaper, and more portable. Perhaps I will one day run into a word I cannot find on the app, and then I will turn to the leather-bound book for enlightenment. :-D

I received this in a very timely fashion and in excellent condition with excellent packaging. I have been using it and it is exactly what all the advertising stated, a dictionary with many, many korean words. Thank you and keep up the good work on shipping. I was thoroughly impressed and pleased with my purchase.
