Dr. Eugene P. Odum is known as the father of modern ecosystem ecology. Rather than focusing on a single facet of an ecosystem, he advocates looking at the big picture, including the importance of the human element. Author of the first major textbook on ecology (in 1953), recipient of Sweden's Craaford Prize, and founder of the University of Georgia's Institute of Ecology, many consider him to be the foremost ecologist today. He and his wife, Martha, traveled the world together for nearly sixty years; while he taught or conducted research, she would document the surrounding landscape in watercolor. Together, they formed the ideal partnership of art and ecology.
