Book Description

December 7, 2005

The concept of Santa Fe "style" was invented in 1912 by city leaders anxious to attract tourists and the money they would bring. Initially focused on the Pueblo Spanish architectural revival then in vogue, its more recent invocation reflects a fabricated connection between the indigenous charms of the ancient city and everything from cheap cologne to pink coyotes, from sprawling multi-million-dollar stuccoed mansions clinging precariously to fragile hillsides to exotic drinks and dishes at local restaurants. Lost beneath this sell of glitz and glamour is another Santa Fe, one which grew out of a unique history, starting with the lessons gleaned from neighboring Pueblo Indians. Spanish settlers learned how to adapt to the isolation they faced and carved out an existence based on simplicity, humility, functionality, and especially ingenuity. And out of this has grown a charming city with an old-world feeling.

The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style traces the developments that took a unique and sustainable way of life and turned it into style. Through a rich blend of historic and contemporary photographs, the book unveils the undeniable magic of this charming city that still can be found if one knows where to look.

Kingsley Hammett has been a working journalist since 1978. He lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife Jerilou, for nearly twenty-five years, where they published Designer/builder magazine. He holds master's degrees in both journalism and humanities/history, and is the author of Crafting New Mexico Furniture, Classic New Mexico Furniture, Early New Mexican Furniture, and Santa Fe: A Walk Through Time. Jerilou Hammett holds master's degrees in education and humanities. She is co-founder of Designer/builder magazine and has been active in the civic life of Santa Fe for more than twenty-five years. Peter Scholz is currently a freelance graphic designer living in Colorado. He spent thirteen years in Santa Fe as co-owner of a design firm.

From the Inside Flap

The concept of Santa Fe "style" was original invented in 1912 by city leaders anxious to attract tourists and the money they would bring. Originally focused on the Pueblo Spanish architectural revival then in vogue, its more recent invocation reflects a fabricated connection between the indigenous charms of the ancient city and everything from cheap cologne to pink coyotes, from sprawling multi-million-dollar stuccoed mansions clinging precariously to fragile hillsides to exotic drinks and dishes at local restaurants.

Lost beneath this sell of glitz and glamour is another Santa Fe. It is the authentic Santa Fe that grew out of a unique history, starting with the lessons gleaned from neighboring Pueblo Indians. Spanish settlers learned how to adapt to the isolation the faced and carved out an existence based on simplicity, humility, functionality, and especially ingenuity. Early New Mexicans had to use what they found-earth, stones, wood, straw, water, bones-to make the things they needed. Everything they created had a function; nothing was gratuitous. Homes were small and clustered together into compounds for mutual support and safety and to keep the family close. Streets followed goat paths and water courses. And out of this has grown a charming city with an old-world feeling. The true Santa Fe is a way of life; it's not a style.

The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style challenges the misconceptions fostered by a century of insensitive marketing. It traces the developments that took a unique and sustainable way of life and turned it into style. Through a rich blend of historic and contemporary photographs, the book unveils the undeniable magic of this old city that still can be found if one knows where to look. The Essence of Santa Fe serves as a guide to that magic and to the true essence of Santa Fe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great style; weak on details, March 12, 2006

This review is from: The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style (Hardcover)
The historical information on Santa Fe was very well researched and presented in an entertaining manner. The characters who shaped Santa Fe came alive to the reader. My only frustration was that most of the archived photographs were not dated although most of them came from the museum. It seemed to me to be a serious oversight on the part of the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Old West to 300 Galleries, January 9, 2007
This review is from: The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style (Hardcover)
The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style is an excellent pictoral history of a beautiful city that has transitioned from its pioneer days, as depicted by Willa Cather in Death Comes to the Archbishop, to one that greets thousands a year who come to listen to opera and visit its 300+ galleries. The book is informative and interesting. After buying our copy, we ordered two more to give to dear friends who are enthusiasts of Santa Fe. This should attest to our opinion of it!

This review is from: The Essence of Santa Fe: From a Way of Life to a Style (Hardcover)
As a long time visitor to this city, this is possibly one of the best books on the subject that I have seen. It gives a great overview of the history and importance of the city and the surrounding area to the culture of the United States. Highly recommended.
