Book Description

March 14, 1995 Shambhala Pocket Classics
The deepest benefits of T'ai Chi cannot be realized without an understanding of its underlying principles. This book presents these principles through translations of three core classics of T'ai Chi that are often considered the "T'ai Chi Bible," accompanied by the author's insightful commentary. Master Liao demonstrates how to increase the body's inner energy (ch'i) and transform it into power, health, and well-being.

More About the Author

From the age of twelve, Waysun Liao studied with a wandering Taoist and in a Taoist temple until he became a full Taichi and Tao master. Considered one of the world's foremost authorities on traditional Taoist wisdom and Chi arts, he is the founder and master of one of the oldest Taichi centers in North America, which is located in Oak Park, Illinois. Master Liao is the author of several books, including Tao: The Way of God, Nine Nights with the Taoist Master, Chi: Discovering Your Life Energy, Essence of T'ai Chi, and the acclaimed T'ai Chi Classics, which has been translated into nine languages. In addition, he has compiled a complete Taichi learning system on DVD, preserving the ancient temple teachings on moving meditation, the Tao, and internal energy development.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great balance to the physical form, August 2, 2001

This review is from: The Essence of T'ai Chi (Shambhala Pocket Classics) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful summary of Tai Chi Classics by the same author. My Sifu spoke very highly of Waysun Liao as well as Marshall Ho'o, who's works are also available through Amazon. This book, exactly as it's title says, is the essence of the internal martial art of Tai Chi. As a beginner, I have found it a great companion to the physical aspect of the form. If you are serious about the art/philosophy of Tai Chi, then this is a perfect travel version of an even greater book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick Read, June 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Not really the best Tai Chi book I've read. The book is far too short to go into any real detail but for a quick overview this is great. Its a smaller book so great for carrying around. Definitely more of a beginner intermediate level book in my opinion. More Philosophy than instruction, for a quick read I'd definitely recommend, but if you're looking for in depth instruction or higher level philosophy this probably isnt the right book for you. A beginner who wants a crash course on the other hand might find a lot to love in this little guy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely useful to the Tai Chi practicioner, August 8, 2006
This review is from: The Essence of T'ai Chi (Shambhala Pocket Classics) (Paperback)
This book is a pocket-sized slice of Asian wisdom, succinctly covering the history of Chinese internal martial arts, an explanation of chi theory, some basic internal exercises, and a few excerpted "Tai Chi Classics" by revered masters of the art.

Beginners, dabblers, and advanced students could do worse than spend a few bucks on this book; it costs next to nothing, yet it contains genuine, expert advice in a concentrated form. Good stuff.
