The celebration of black womanhood that began in 1970 when five black men--Gordon Parks, Jonathan Blount, Clarence O. Smith, Ed Lewis, and Cecil Hollingsworth--began publishing Essence is an occasion commemorated by this anniversary publication. Essence is the magazine that recognizes and discusses issues from an African American woman's perspective. Over the years, famous black women have been interviewed, photographed, and showcased in the magazine. Each issue has featured discussions on topics, from motherhood to mutual funds, that transcend gender and race.
