What a fine set this is, and what an great set it could have been. First, let me say these are serious recordings that by great artists almost all around. A set of Beethoven I would recommend to anyone, anywhere. Worth a grudging five stars despite some flaws I felt were serious.

The most important flaw are some pretty low bitrates in some places, such as Beethoven's Fourth Symphony conducted by Otto Klemperer, which clocks in at 147-150 kbps. Now, given that this particular recording is mono and the bitrate is variable, 150 actually isn't terrible. And believe me, I'm no audiophile or one to put on airs regarding inferior sound technology. Still and all, getting down into this range is a bit of a disappointment. Similar story for the Glenn Gould's recording of Piano Concerto No. 2, which is just 144-145 kbps.

That all being said, bitrates are decent on most tracks here. Of the 85 tracks in the set, 63 have VBRs of over 200 kbps, which is good enough for my older ears, which can't hear anything over about 14,000 Hz anyway. (MP3s of 192 kbps, not variable, are pretty good at capturing sounds up to about 16,500 Hz.)

The other major flaw is the sloppy labeling. They provide conductor information for the symphonies, and soloist information on the concertos, but they do not list the orchestras, just saying "Various Artists". Also they left the conductors off several concertos. Seriously?

(Update 6/15/2013: In addition, in at least one case I have doubts about the accuracy of the metadata. Piano Concerto No. 2 is supposed to be performed by Glenn Gould. No conductor is listed on the first two movements, but the third movement is identified as being conducted by Alexander Gibson.

It's not the best symphonic orchestra, but it damn close, the great price make it sound even better, I am listening to some of his lessor works that you rarely hear on the FM stations that play classical music, one needs to listen to them to broaden your own understanding of Beethoven's work's and maybe the turmoil in his life.

Cube denizen here. I know next to nothing about classical music so I'm not distracted by the differences among orchestras, conductors, and etc. This provides some nice background music for the workday.
