Editorial Reviews

A master of the big beat and the big hook, Squier was destined for the arenas. These are the '80s hits that took him there: The Stroke; In the Dark; My Kinda Lover; Everybody Wants You; Emotions in Motion; Rock Me Tonite; All Night Long; Eye on You; Love Is the Hero , and more (including his oft-sampled The Big Beat )!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Billy Squier April 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I honestly believe that Capitol Records is incapable of releasing a thorough Billy Squier CD. This one fails once again; however, it is the best effort yet and worth the purchase. This is Capitol's 5th single CD release with three of the earlier four earning a 4 star rating from AMG, and one a 3 star effort. AMG also rates this collection as 4 stars.

The sound quality is very good. The packaging leaves a lot to be desired, as it only consists of a fold-out paper insert with credits and the tracklisting. There is no biography or song notes for those who may be interested in such.

The song selection is solid for the most part. Some may dislike the sequencing as the songs are mixed up chronologically, but in the age of iPods you can sequence the tracklist any way you want. The biggest MIA this time around is "She's A Runner" from 1982's Emotions In Motion album. It is the only song to chart on Billboard's Hot 100 not to be included on this CD. Inexcusable. The disc itself only runs 64 minutes in length, so there is no reason for its absence or a few other charting singles as well (on Billboards Mainstream Rock charts).

The big news here is the inclusion of "Lonely Is The Night" from 1981's Don't Say No album. It has been the most requested song by fans and critics on every single CD compilation before this one. It finally makes an appearance and really adds to the value of this disc. An FM staple that was played regulary in the early 80's and in concert as well. "Learn How To Live" was a very pleasant surprise from Emotions In Motion that is only overshadowed by the inclusion of the aforementioned song. It was the second highest charting single from the EIM album on Billboards Mainstream Rock charts (#15) behind only "Everybody Wants You" (#1).

5.0 out of 5 stars You should know almost ALL of these songs. August 1, 2011
By Jen
Format:MP3 Music
It is easy to forget how many hits he has. And I am not talking about the one everyone knows (The Stroke). Sit back and listen to songs like Emotions in Motion and you can really enjoy his music. Good stuff, and takes me back to the 80's when rock was king and made you feel good. None of that woe is me stuff or rap of today. Spend the five bucks and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs that deserve remastering April 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this primarily for 'Lonely Is the Night,' a favorite of mine ("Red lights, green lights, stop 'n go jive; Headlines, deadlines, jammin' your mind . . ."), but was pleasantly surprised by the familiarity of many great rock anthems on here -- ones that don't command much air time any more, even on the '80s rock stations. Tunes I'd forgotten, but thoroughly enjoy (e.g., Rock Me Tonite).

It's a good compilation. My only complaint is that a high-end system easily demonstrates the mediocre sound engineering -- the range simply isn't there, and it sounds a bit muddy besides. Many of these tracks truly need (and deserve) to be remastered from the original recordings! -- I guess I need to get the 30th Anniv edition of the album Don't Say No, which seems to get high marks for remastering (see reviews here at Amz). But we still need a good remastering of Billy's subsequent 2 albums!

5.0 out of 5 stars What your 80's collection is missing... August 26, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
His was a short and sweet ride to the top of rock-n-roll stardom. With his freshman album, he hit it big. Real big. He followed a solid right with a big left hook. His second album delivered the same huge pop-rock anthems that the first had. For whatever reason, his career began an all-too-early fade. What truly stands out about Billy Squire and his discography is that he was one helluva a great songwriter and singer- the whole package. These are truly great pop-rock songs with huge delicious hooks that you are forced to bite into. And if you don't have at least one of his songs in your collection... well, it would be like the Louvre not having a da Vinci.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Billy Squier hits June 10, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Many of the other of Billy Squier's Best/Hits compilations lack 1 or 2 important songs. Don't bother with any of these:
- 16 Strokes: The Best of Billy Squier
- Best Of: Green Series
- The Best of Billy Squier
- Best Of: 10 Best Series
- Absolute Hits

This one covers them all, including Lonely Is The Night, and All Night Long.

Go straight to this one Essential Billy Squier, 5/5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great collection April 30, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
There is so much from the '80s that is hokey and easy to make fun of (What were we thinking when it came to music, clothes, and hairstyles?). And even some of Billy Squire's music can fit into that category. However, there are still some great rockin' tunes on this album. Maybe it's just nostalgia from a time that overall was a very positive time in my life.

Fun stuff!
